Reese Witherspoon on Rewiring Her Brain After Abusive Relationship

Reese Witherspoon has spoken candidly about an abusive ex-partner who left her feeling 'spirit diminished' and forced her to 'rewire her brain'. The 49-year-old actress, best known for her role in The Morning Show, revealed in a recent interview that she struggled to recognise the toxic dynamics of the relationship when she was younger.

Speaking on the New York Times podcast 'The Interview', Witherspoon said: 'I wasn't emotionally mature when I was young, and you get into relationships that don't work for you, and sometimes you don't even see the dynamics that are happening.' She added: 'When I got out of that, it took me a while to reconstitute myself. My spirit had been diminished because I thought all those awful things that person said about me were true, and I had to rewire my brain.'

The actress noted that being a public figure compounded the difficulty of navigating such a relationship, particularly after having children with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. 'It's nearly impossible at this point, with everybody dehumanising you, taking pictures of you like you're an animal in the zoo instead of a person with their children,' she said.

This is not the first time Witherspoon has addressed the issue. In a 2018 interview with O Magazine, she described a pivotal moment when 'a line got drawn in the sand and it got crossed, and my brain just switched'. She credited that experience with shaping her into the person she is today, enabling her to embrace her ambition. Witherspoon also said her past informed her decision to produce and star in Big Little Lies, an HBO series centred on domestic abuse.
