Host Claudia Winkleman revealed that she has selected a Secret Traitor, whose identity remains unknown to both the other contestants and viewers at home.
For the first time, four Traitors were chosen during the opening episode. After interviewing all contestants, Claudia tapped each on the shoulder while they were blindfolded around the Round Table. However, the identity of the Secret Traitor was kept hidden from the audience, who only know that this player wears a red cloak instead of the usual green.
The Secret Traitor's role is to provide a shortlist of potential murder victims to the other Traitors each night. The Traitors can only murder one player from this list, and the Secret Traitor cannot include themselves. This means that even if more players are vulnerable after a task, the Traitors' options are limited to the shortlist.
The Secret Traitor knows the identities of the other three Traitors—Hugo, Rachel, and Stephen—making them the only player aware of everyone's true status. The regular Traitors are frustrated by this secrecy, as they do not know who the Secret Traitor is. Claudia hinted that the Traitors will not be able to uncover the Secret Traitor until they win back their power, though the specifics remain unclear.
The first episode narrowed down the suspect list: James, Netty, and Maz were named as potential murder targets, meaning they cannot be the Secret Traitor. With 16 suspects left, viewers are left guessing who holds the ultimate power. The Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
