Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid has revealed that her offer to visit former co-presenter Piers Morgan in hospital was politely declined, after he suffered a serious fall requiring surgery.
A Painful Stumble Leads to Major Surgery
The incident occurred last week when Piers Morgan tripped on a small step inside a London hotel restaurant. The 60-year-old broadcaster described falling "like a sack of spuds," resulting in a severe fracture at the top of his femur. The injury was so significant that it necessitated a full hip replacement operation.
Morgan shared the news with his followers on Instagram, posting images from his hospital bed alongside an X-ray of his broken hip. He humorously blamed Donald Trump for his New Year getting "off to a cracking start." Doctors have advised that his recovery will involve up to three months of restricted movement and no long-haul travel for at least 12 weeks.
Susanna Reid's Grapes Joke on GMB
Discussing the accident live on Monday's edition of Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid, 55, updated co-hosts Ed Balls and Kate Garraway on their friend's condition. "He has a new hip, so good luck with your recovery," she said. "I think he's going to be in the hospital for a few days as he recovers."
Reid then revealed her attempted gesture of support, quipping: "I did offer to turn up with grapes, but he says he has enough to open a vineyard, so I was rebuffed." She had previously commented on his Instagram post, writing: "Nooooo!! Get fixed soon - I owe you a hug when you’re out."
The pair presented GMB together until Morgan's dramatic exit in 2021, following his controversial remarks about Meghan Markle.
Celebrity Well-Wishes and Past ITV Tensions
Morgan's social media announcement was flooded with messages from famous friends. ITV colleague Lorraine Kelly wrote: "You daft bugger - hope you are OK," while Amanda Holden joked the accident put Morgan's wife Celia "off the hook for a few weeks." Eamonn Holmes offered both sympathy and a visitor's package of "Lucozade and Grapes!"
This incident follows Morgan's last notable ITV appearance in November, where he clashed fiercely with Dr Amir Khan on Lorraine over trans rights and women's spaces. The heated debate left host Lorraine Kelly visibly struggling to maintain control of the segment, with viewers noting she looked "very uncomfortable."
During that appearance, Morgan also joked about ITV's "savage" cost-cutting measures, referencing reduced programming for shows like Lorraine and Loose Women. The broadcaster confirmed 220 job cuts in May last year, a move Kelly described as "heartbreaking."
Since leaving ITV, Piers Morgan has launched his own show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, which airs on Talk TV and streams on YouTube. His recovery from hip surgery is now his immediate focus, as he faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
