Former Love Island star Brett Staniland has shared the horrifying details of a freak gym accident that left his face literally "hanging off" after a catastrophic equipment failure.
The reality television personality, who appeared on the 2021 series of the hit ITV show, was using a cable machine when the unexpected incident occurred. The metal clasp holding the weight suddenly snapped, recoiling with brutal force directly into his face.
"My face was hanging off," Brett recounted with shocking candour. "It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. The force was incredible."
Emergency Surgery and 35 Stitches
The injury was so severe that it required immediate emergency plastic surgery. Surgeons worked meticulously to repair the damage, inserting a staggering 35 stitches to reconstruct his facial features.
Staniland shared graphic images of his recovery process on social media, showing extensive bruising, swelling, and the clear line of stitches running across his face. The photos serve as a stark warning about potential gym hazards.
A Warning About Gym Safety
Speaking out about the ordeal, Brett emphasised that this wasn't a case of improper equipment use, but rather a catastrophic mechanical failure that could happen to anyone.
"I was using the equipment correctly," he insisted. "The metal clasp just snapped. It's made me realise how vulnerable we are in these environments we consider safe."
The incident has raised questions about gym equipment maintenance and safety protocols in fitness facilities across the UK.
Long Road to Recovery
While the physical wounds are healing, Staniland admits the psychological impact remains. The model and PhD student has had to put his life on hold during the recovery process.
"The pain was unbearable, but the mental trauma has been just as challenging," he revealed. "You don't expect to be disfigured by equipment you use every week."
Despite the horrific experience, Brett maintains a positive outlook, using his platform to raise awareness about gym safety while documenting his recovery journey for his followers.
