White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has publicly addressed the significant age difference in her marriage, acknowledging that the 32-year gap with her husband, Nicholas Riccio, is 'very unusual'.
A Challenging Conversation with Family
The 28-year-old Trump administration official revealed that informing her parents about her relationship with the 60-year-old real estate developer was a difficult moment. This was particularly poignant given that Leavitt's mother is younger than Riccio. However, she explained that her parents' perspective changed once they got to know him, witnessing his character and the deep affection he holds for her.
"But then, of course, once they got to know him and saw who he is as a man, and his character and how much he adores me, I think it became quite easy for them," Leavitt stated during an interview on the Pod Force One with Miranda Devine podcast. She described their current dynamic as a "typical family relationship," where her husband has immense respect for her parents and they all enjoy spending time together.
From the Campaign Trail to Marriage and Motherhood
The couple's story began in 2022, introduced by a mutual friend while Leavitt was campaigning for a congressional seat in New Hampshire. Although she ultimately lost the election to Democrat Chris Pappas, she found a life partner. Their relationship progressed, leading to an engagement in 2023 and a wedding in January 2025, just days before President Donald Trump's second inauguration.
Their family grew with the birth of their son, Niko, in July 2024. Leavitt glowingly described Riccio as an "incredibly hands-on father," noting that he and their son are "the best of friends."
Opposites Attract: An Introvert and His Biggest Fan
Leavitt highlighted the contrasting personalities within her marriage. She characterised her husband as 'very introverted' and 'very private,' a man who stays behind the scenes and avoids social media. This stands in stark contrast to her very public role facing the White House press corps.
Despite his reserved nature, Leavitt said Riccio is her staunchest supporter. "He is my number one fan. He watches every interview, every press briefing," she shared. She also expressed admiration for his professional achievements, describing him as a 'self-made' real estate developer from New Hampshire who owns over a dozen buildings. His established career, she noted, allows him to fully support her demanding position in the public eye.
When questioned directly about whether she could not find a partner her own age, Leavitt laughed and replied, "Honestly, no, if you want to know the truth." While she rarely posts about him online, recent Halloween photos offered a glimpse into their family life, showing the couple and their son trick-or-treating and even visiting with former President Trump.
