Jeremy Vine Reveals Terror for His Daughters After Joey Barton's 'Torrent of Filth'
Jeremy Vine: Barton abuse left me fearing for daughters

Television presenter Jeremy Vine has revealed in court how he was pushed to the brink by former footballer Joey Barton's 'cloud of filth' and threatening online behaviour, leaving him genuinely fearing for his daughters' safety.

The veteran broadcaster described how Barton's social media tirade escalated into something far more sinister, with the ex-Manchester City midfielder posting what Vine perceived as direct threats against his family.

The Breaking Point

Vine told Westminster Magistrates' Court that Barton's posts left him 'close to breaking' and compelled him to contact the police. The abuse began after Vine had commented on Barton's previous online behaviour towards other broadcasters.

'I thought he was actually coming to my house,' Vine testified, describing his terror when Barton posted a photograph of a street similar to his own. 'I was genuinely scared for the safety of my daughters.'

A Pattern of Abuse

The court heard how Barton's campaign against Vine included:

  • Comparing the presenter to notorious sex offenders
  • Posting Vine's personal contact information online
  • Sharing images that suggested surveillance of Vine's neighbourhood
  • Encouraging his followers to target the broadcaster

Vine described the psychological impact as overwhelming, telling the court: 'It felt like being trapped under a cloud of filth that I couldn't escape from.'

Legal Consequences

Barton faces charges of malicious communication and harassment without violence following the alleged campaign between February and May this year. The former footballer, who appeared in court remotely, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth during the hearing.

The case continues as social media platforms face increasing scrutiny over their handling of online abuse and celebrity harassment.
