Jamie Laing Forced to Apologise After Boat Race Announcement Error
Reality television personality Jamie Laing has broken his silence following an embarrassing live television mistake during the 2026 men's Boat Race coverage. The Made in Chelsea star was hosting Channel 4's broadcast alongside Clare Balding when he incorrectly announced that Cambridge University Boat Club had lost the prestigious annual rowing event.
The On-Air Slip-Up That Sparked Confusion
During Saturday's coverage, Laing declared: "Commiserations go to the losing crew, Cambridge University Boat Club" before immediately hearing audible reactions from the crowd. Realising his error, the 37-year-old quickly corrected himself, stating: "Sorry, my mistake. That's a typo. Commiserations go to the losing crew, Oxford University Boat Club."
Cambridge had actually secured their fourth consecutive victory in the historic competition, marking their seventh win in eight years. The Light Blues' president Noam Mouelle, who participated in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 winning crews, expressed his delight at the achievement, stating: "That feels amazing."
Social Media Reaction and Laing's Response
Unforgiving social media users wasted little time in amplifying Laing's discomfort following the televised gaffe. In response, the reality star took to his Instagram account hours later with an emotional clip from his and wife Sophie Habboo's new Disney+ series, Raising Chelsea.
Captioning the upload "vulnerability is cool," Laing appeared visibly emotional as he discussed personal struggles with impending parenthood. "I'm feeling a bit lonely because I am struggling with the idea of parenthood because you feel a bit lonely in that sense," he confessed to his wife.
Sophie offered reassurance, telling her husband: "First of all, you're going to be an amazing father, what are you worried about? You're going to be amazing, you are without a doubt the most loving person I have ever met in my life."
Drawing Parallels with Awards Show History
Laing demonstrated his ability to laugh at himself by comparing the situation to another famous awards ceremony mix-up. "It's like the Oscars all over again," he joked, referencing the infamous 2017 Academy Awards incident where the wrong Best Picture winner was announced.
The television personality then properly welcomed the actual winners to the podium, stating: "Now, let's welcome the winners to the podium, Cambridge University Boat Club."
Promoting Personal Documentary Series
The Instagram clip served as promotion for Raising Chelsea: Jamie & Sophie's Next Chapter, now streaming on Disney+. The couple, who became parents to baby Ziggy last December after their romance blossomed on the Channel 4 reality programme that launched their careers, shared an extensive statement about the series.
Laing revealed they felt "nervous" about providing such personal glimpses into their private world but assured audiences they didn't "hold anything back." He explained: "It's the most raw and honest show we've ever created, and we truly couldn't be prouder of it!"
The reality star elaborated on their motivation for sharing their lives publicly: "People ask us why we share so much of our lives with the world, and the truth is, we love storytelling. Real, true and authentic storytelling is really what life is about. The highs, the lows, the times we laugh and the moments we cry. That is life and that is exactly what we want to share with you all."
Intimate Glimpses into Parenthood Journey
The series provides intimate footage of the couple's journey to parenthood, from planning to conceive through midwife appointments. Sophie confesses in one scene: "I've always wanted to be a mum," while describing pregnancy as "a rollercoaster" during an ultrasound scan.
Another emotional clip shows Sophie in tears as Jamie comforts her, saying: "Nothing's the matter, I promise you." The couple emphasized their commitment to authenticity, with Laing stating: "We're nervous, but we promised we wouldn't hold anything back, and we kept our promise.... Get ready for the curtains to be drawn back!!"
