Influencer Criticised for Leaving Dog Behind While Fleeing Dubai Conflict
Influencer Slammed for Abandoning Dog During Dubai Evacuation

French social media influencer Maddy Burciaga has been publicly condemned by an animal welfare organisation after disclosing that she left her pet dog behind while fleeing Dubai with her family. The controversy erupted following missile and drone attacks on the United Arab Emirates, prompting Burciaga to relocate to Mauritius.

Animal Rights Group Issues Strong Rebuke

The animal rights group La Ligue Des Animaux released a statement criticising Burciaga's decision to leave her dog with the family nanny. The organisation highlighted the perceived lack of loyalty, stating that a dog would never abandon its human companion to save itself. They emphasised that dogs demonstrate unwavering loyalty, even in dangerous situations such as wartime.

Influencer's Explanation Sparks Online Debate

Burciaga, who boasts 2.7 million Instagram followers, explained that the extensive paperwork required to transport the animal made the process too complicated during the urgent evacuation. This justification quickly ignited a fierce debate across social media platforms, with users expressing divided opinions on the matter.

Some commentators argued that abandoning a pet indicates a lack of genuine affection, suggesting the animal may have been used merely for social media engagement. Others defended the influencer, noting that the relocation might be temporary and that criticising her exclusively overlooks shared responsibility with her husband.

Historical Controversy and Background

This incident is not the first controversy surrounding the influencer. Several years prior, Burciaga faced criticism for allegedly misleading promotions regarding her cosmetics brand, Mlips Cosmetics. She had implied a partnership with the Fondation Brigitte Bardot animal welfare organisation, which later denied any association or financial arrangements.

Burciaga initially gained public recognition through her participation in the French reality television programme Qui veut épouser mon fils? in 2015. Since then, she has built a substantial online following and business empire.

Regional Context and Broader Concerns

The evacuation occurred against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions, with approximately 1,700 missiles and drones reportedly fired at the United Arab Emirates since late February 2026. This security situation has raised concerns among expatriates and investors about stability in Dubai.

Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai and Due Process International, noted parallels with previous economic downturns, observing that some residents are leaving pets behind during their departures. The situation reflects broader anxieties about conflict impacts on the region's expatriate community.

Burciaga has been approached for further comment regarding the allegations and the ongoing public discussion about pet welfare during crisis evacuations.
