Fearne Cotton Speaks Candidly About Single Parent Challenges
Television presenter Fearne Cotton has publicly shared her difficulties in maintaining composure as a single mother, just days after her former spouse Jesse Wood revealed he is expecting a child with his new partner. The 44-year-old broadcaster, who separated from musician Jesse Wood in December 2024 after a decade of marriage, detailed the overwhelming strain of balancing her career with raising their two children.
Podcast Confession Highlights Emotional Strain
During a recent episode of her Happy Place podcast, Cotton confessed to experiencing a turbulent week filled with stress. "I've had an up and down week, certainly. There's been some stressful stuff going on. I'm a single parent. I work full time with about a thousand jobs. I'm trying to juggle it all," she explained. The media personality, who shares son Rex, 12, and daughter Honey, nine, with Wood, described the past week as "absolute chaos" and is now preparing for a brief respite.
Reflecting on the expectations placed on single mothers, Cotton added, "I think the pressure for us to be holding it all together is mad. Look how much we're trying to do. It's absurd." She emphasized that no one should be expected to manage everything perfectly under such circumstances, stating, "It's absurd for us to think we should hold it all together under those circumstances. It is too much, and I think the only thing we can do in those times is lean on really good mates."
Support Network and Daily Struggles
Cotton praised her close friends Lavashni and Ella for their assistance with school runs and pickups when she is unable to manage. She highlighted the cumulative impact of small daily tasks, noting, "I've been trying to fit in so much stuff so I can take a little bit of time off. I've been doubling up on everything, and trying to get all emails done - and feeling guilty if I'm missing a school pickup." Specific challenges included a school concert requiring a particular outfit for her daughter, which she said "just all those little extra things tip you over the edge."
Background on Jesse Wood's Pregnancy Announcement
Jesse Wood, 49, and his girlfriend Gemma Gregory, 40, a former Made In Chelsea star, announced their pregnancy last week via Instagram. Gregory shared photos showcasing her baby bump with captions such as "incoming" and "made by these muppets." This news comes 16 months after Wood's unexpected separation from Cotton, and it surprised many fans given Wood's recent court admission of financial struggles, living on approximately £1,000 per month during the divorce proceedings.
Gregory, daughter of actor Paul Gregory, has an 11-year-old son from a previous relationship. Wood has four children from two prior relationships: Rex and Honey with Cotton, and two adult children, Arthur and Lola, with his first wife Tilly Wood.
Relationship Histories and Moving Forward
Fearne Cotton and Jesse Wood married in July 2014 at Richmond Register Office in south-west London after announcing their engagement in 2013. The couple, who met in Ibiza in 2011, publicly declared their split in December 2024, with Cotton posting on social media, "It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that Jesse and I are ending our marriage. Our priority has been, and will always be, our children."
Wood went public with his relationship with Gemma Gregory in April 2025. Meanwhile, Cotton has moved on with television director Elliot Hegarty, who is ten years her senior, making her first official public appearance with him in November 2025. Cotton has previously addressed her divorce challenges, telling Lorraine Kelly in March last year that the separation was "all very amicable and the kids are doing great."
The former Celebrity Juice panellist, who now operates the wellness brand Happy Place, continues to navigate the complexities of single parenthood while maintaining her professional commitments, underscoring the universal struggles faced by many in similar situations.
