In a remarkably candid new interview, singer and actress Demi Lovato has opened up about her ongoing sobriety journey and recent marriage to fellow musician Jutes while showcasing a striking new look for Who What Wear magazine.
A Striking Photographic Display
The 33-year-old former Disney Channel star posed dramatically for the publication's latest cover story, photographed against a rugged cliff landscape. Lovato stunned in a halter-style nude dress that elegantly clung to her toned physique, featuring dazzling embellishments that caught the light perfectly.
Her dark hair was styled in a sophisticated updo, parted to the side and swept back to keep strands away from her face. In one particularly eye-catching shot, the singer turned partially away from the camera to reveal the plunging backless design of her outfit, adding a sultry flair to the desert setting.
The natural beauty look was completed with minimal makeup, allowing Lovato's features to shine through naturally as she posed against the rocky backdrop. Additional images from the shoot featured the performer in a flowing white dress layered with a brown feathered jacket, and later in a nude corset that highlighted her slim waist.
Raw Honesty About Sobriety and Mental Health
During her conversation with Who What Wear, Lovato didn't shy away from discussing her hard-won sobriety. "Look, I'm sober," she stated matter-of-factly when the topic arose.
The songstress elaborated on how she maintains her lifestyle while still enjoying social occasions. "[Clubbing] is not conducive to my lifestyle, but when we go out, I'm chugging Red Bull - no, Celsius - and we're having a great time," she explained. "I protect my energy while also still savoring those moments and picking special occasions to go out and have fun and dance."
Lovato's journey to sobriety has been particularly challenging, involving five separate rehabilitation stays throughout her career. The star has been transparent about her mental health struggles, including eating disorders and receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis at age 18.
In 2018, Lovato experienced a near-fatal overdose involving heroin and fentanyl at her Hollywood Hills home, marking a turning point in her health journey.
Finding Hope and Happiness
During a discussion at The Center for Youth Mental Health last year, Lovato reflected on finding hope during her fifth in-patient treatment. "I think the glimmer of hope started to change when I started to find joy and the little things in life," she shared with Us Weekly. "And that was something that was so foreign to me before because I was so used to not seeing hope."
The singer credited medication with helping her "tremendously" and acknowledged feeling "defeated" at times before everything fell into place. "When all of the key parts started to fit into place like a perfect puzzle, I started to find the light again," she revealed.
Lovato expressed gratitude for having overcome her past challenges, noting that "they have shaped me into the pottery that you see today."
Blissful Marriage to Jutes
The interview also provided rare insight into Lovato's marriage to singer Jutes, whose real name is Jordan Lutes. The couple tied the knot in May during a romantic ceremony in Santa Barbara, California.
Lovato made a breathtaking bride in a Vivienne Westwood gown, saying "I do" around 4pm in front of their gathered guests, according to Vogue. The ceremony came just one day after they participated in a practice run with their wedding party.
Reflecting on their relationship timeline, Lovato admitted, "I had expected to be married by a certain age. There's all this pressure that society puts on you, but it just organically happened."
The star couldn't contain her happiness, gushing, "I'm really happy. I told my husband today, 'I've never been more in love with you. I didn't know my love could grow for you more so than it already has.' The timing was perfect."
The couple originally met during a songwriting session for Lovato's 2022 rock album Holy Fvck. "We became friends before we became lovers," she explained, noting that she had "opened up" to her now-husband during a vulnerable period shortly after leaving treatment.
"I had just come out of treatment, and I was newly sober and raw with my emotions. I had nothing to medicate with. He was there for me as a friend, helping me get through this deep depression I was in," Lovato shared.
Jutes has also been navigating his own sobriety journey and recently acknowledged Lovato's crucial support. "It's very, very helpful having the support of Demi," he told People earlier this month. "Sadly I'm like, I don't know if I would have stuck with it if it wasn't for her, in the beginning."
The musician admitted that maintaining sobriety remains challenging at times but emphasized his growth, saying, "I've grown up a lot and want to live a long time now that I have found my 'soulmate' in Lovato. I don't want to destroy my body. I used to not care about what happened to me when I get older..."
The interview comes after Lovato sparked Ozempic rumours earlier this year when she posted bikini-clad photos to Instagram, showing off her transformed physique. Her latest album It's Not That Deep was released on October 24, with an accompanying tour scheduled to begin on April 8 next year.
