Dax Shepard Opens Up About Tumultuous Start with Eric Dane
In a candid interview, podcast host Dax Shepard, 51, has revealed that he initially "hated" the late actor Eric Dane when they first met, describing a near-physical altercation that later evolved into a deep and unexpected friendship. Shepard shared these emotional memories during a conversation with CNN's Anderson Cooper at the New Orleans Book Festival on Thursday, April 2, reflecting on Dane's death in February at age 53 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
A Rocky Beginning in Recovery
Shepard recounted meeting Dane in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where their first impressions were far from positive. "Eric Dane, I can now say I met in recovery and we hated each other," Shepard admitted. "I hated him! I thought he was a bit of a bully." The tension escalated to a point where Shepard almost engaged in a fistfight with the Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy star, highlighting the volatile nature of their early interactions.
Detailing the incident, Shepard explained, "We were in a meeting [and] he threatened a younger member of the group, and this had been simmering for a long time, and I said, 'Let's go. Outside. Right now.' It was on. And we walked outside to a fist fight in the driveway of an AA meeting." Fortunately, other attendees intervened to break up the confrontation, preventing physical harm but leaving a strained dynamic between the two men.
Bonding Over Shared Struggles
Over time, Shepard's perspective shifted as he learned more about Dane's personal history through their shared experiences in AA. "God bless both of us. We kept coming back to the same meeting," Shepard said. "Over the course of the next two years, I found myself starting to kind of relate to him. I heard his story."
Dane's childhood trauma played a pivotal role in this connection. Shepard revealed, "His father shot himself in his house when he was a little boy. And his mom came upstairs and said, 'I'll tell you what happened if you promise that you won't cry.' So that little boy held onto that. And then that little boy grew up without a dad, like I grew up without a dad, and he was so in search of masculine validation, and it took all these shapes that I hated. That I'm sure he hated in me." This mutual understanding of fatherlessness and the quest for identity began to bridge their initial animosity.
The Turning Point and Lasting Friendship
The breakthrough in their relationship came during an AA meeting when Dane openly expressed his feelings. Shepard recalled, "I remember he had his share one time and I said, 'I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but that's one of my favorite shares I've ever heard.' Maybe a week or two later, one of his shares, he said, 'I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I think I've come to fall in love with Dax.' And then we became friends."
Shepard elaborated on this emotional transformation, stating, "I came to fall in love with a very scared man trying and hoping he had become a man, and I related. I ended up loving him so much." This bond grew stronger over the years, culminating in Shepard's profound admiration for Dane, especially in light of his health struggles.
Eric Dane's Brave Battle with ALS
In April 2025, Dane was diagnosed with ALS, a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, as defined by the Mayo Clinic. He had experienced symptoms for about a year and a half prior to the diagnosis and passed away in February at age 53. Shepard spoke movingly about Dane's courage in facing the illness, noting, "For a person who was so hellbent on being hyper-masculine and incredibly fit, to have agreed to become the face of this disease, completely diminished, I found to be the bravest thing he'd done in all these pursuits of manliness."
Shepard's reflections not only honor Dane's memory but also underscore the unpredictable nature of human connections, showing how initial hostility can blossom into deep affection through shared vulnerability and understanding.
