HGTV presenter David Bromstad is set to share a deeply personal chapter of his life, discussing his past battles with substance abuse and trauma in an upcoming television special.
A Candid Look Behind the Scenes
The beloved 52-year-old host will let cameras into his personal journey in a new hour-long episode of My Lottery Dream House, titled David's Happy Ending. The special premieres on the network on December 19.
While the episode follows Bromstad as he renovates his new home in Central Florida, it also features frank conversations where he opens up about his difficult past. Ahead of the broadcast, the designer spoke about the challenges faced during the renovation and revealed how his creative work has been a lifeline.
How Creativity and Property Saved His Life
'When things were the most difficult and challenging financially, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically, I knew that I never wanted to part from this incredible property,' Bromstad explained. He credited the house project with giving him a vital focus, stating: 'It was because of this property and the will to want to create in it, the house saved my life.'
He emphasised the role of his artistic outlet, saying: 'As an artist and a creator having the outlet of designing, my house was the one thing that was keeping me going. This isn't the first time art has saved my life.' Bromstad added that throughout periods of substance abuse and self-criticism, his creative talent remained a constant and secure foundation.
Embracing the Darkness to Shine Brighter
In an interview with TVInsider, Bromstad stressed the importance of being honest about his struggles in the special. 'I have a very blessed and incredible life, and I do know this,' he continued. 'But it doesn't negate the fact that I've had really hard times in my existence.'
He admitted to previously showing only a polished image: 'I only allowed people to see the bright and shiny parts of me because that was all I was willing to accept from myself.' Now, he is ready to share his full story. 'So, to tell my honest and unapologetically unique story has been something I've been looking forward to, but I didn't want to rush it, and I wanted it to be at the right time.'
Bromstad philosophically concluded: 'You can't have the bright and shining times without the darkness. I don't push away the darkness. I bring it in because I know the darkness only makes my bright and shiny parts shine that much bigger.'
The special will showcase Bromstad transforming his property into a 'pink palace', which he describes as a 'love letter to myself'. He has fronted My Lottery Dream Home since its 2015 premiere, and the show is currently airing its 19th season.
Fans have eagerly expressed support on social media, with one writing: 'You are an amazing individual. Thank you for always spreading your joy.' Another added: 'So happy for you. Definitely tuning in to see all of your wonderful, beautiful home!'
