Coleen Rooney Reveals Her Resilience: 'I've Always Been a Tough Person'
Coleen Rooney: 'I've Always Been a Tough Person'

From standing steadfastly by her husband Wayne Rooney during a torrent of cheating allegations to enduring the heartbreaking loss of a sibling and confronting a former friend in a dramatic court showdown, Coleen Rooney has truly weathered it all. While the turbulent life she has navigated over decades would test anyone's limits, the Liverpudlian WAG, now 39, reveals that her resilience stems from being inherently a 'tough person'.

A Life of Public Strength

The Queen of the I'm A Celebrity jungle, who is also a mother to four boys, has confessed in an interview with OK! magazine that she is no princess, despite her glamorous lifestyle. Reflecting on her decades of public fortitude and stiff-upper-lip mentality, Coleen stated: 'I've always been a tough person. I'm not a princess—I've tackled things and got on with it. I'm constantly on the move.'

Coleen, who shares sons Kai, 16, Klay, 12, Kit, 10, and Cass, 8, with Wayne, first shot to fame at age 16 when her childhood sweetheart Wayne was signed for Everton Football Club. Despite meeting her future husband at age 12 in the Liverpool suburb of Croxteth, it has not been smooth sailing for Coleen, who has publicly battled through Wayne's notorious brothel visits and escort scandals.

Navigating Marital Turmoil

Coleen previously broke her silence on Wayne's past infidelities in an interview with British Vogue, admitting their marriage was 'a battle at times'. Scandal emerged early in their relationship when headlines in 2004 revealed Wayne had visited three prostitutes as a teenager two years prior. It was discovered that Wayne, then 16, paid £140 for sex with prostitute Charlotte Glover, 21, and also slept with Gina McCarrick, then 37, and grandmother Patricia Tierney, then 48, at a Liverpool brothel.

Coleen stood by her man but did not comment publicly initially—later admitting that when the scandal broke, she had not yet slept with Wayne herself. Speaking about the incident in 2023, Coleen said they had 'screaming matches' over his infidelity and she 'couldn't even speak to him' when he first told her the story was about to hit the press.

Personal Tragedy and Family Loss

Away from marital difficulties, Coleen has suffered devastating grief with the loss of her late sister, Rosie, who passed away 13 years ago at just 14 years old. Rosie died following a lifelong battle with Rett syndrome, a rare brain disorder causing severe disabilities that affect physical movement and manifest variably in each case.

Rosie was taken in as a foster child by Coleen's parents, bricklayer Tony and former nursery nurse Colette, when she was two. Although aware she was disabled, they did not know the full extent of her condition, which has no cure. Coleen has always been open about her younger sister, speaking in 2024 about how her family always knew 'Rosie was different'.

In her Wagatha Christie Disney+ documentary, Coleen explained: 'When Rosie came along, she was a massive part of our lives. She was the sister that I never thought I was going to have.' Speaking to her parents, she continued: 'I used to do her hair and loved picking clothes with my mum for her. She brought that little bit extra to the house. We fell in love with her.'

The Wagatha Christie Court Battle

Coleen's documentary was titled Wagatha Christie due to her very public court battle with former friend and fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy, 44. The catalyst was a dramatic open letter Coleen posted on social media in October 2019, revealing she had turned detective to uncover who was leaking stories.

Coleen publicly claimed Rebekah's account was the source behind three newspaper stories featuring fake details she had posted on her private Instagram, including traveling to Mexico for a 'gender selection' procedure, planning to return to TV, and basement flooding at her home. Coleen wrote that she blocked everyone from viewing her Instagram stories except one account, then uploaded false stories for five months, which subsequently appeared in the press.

She delivered the iconic line: 'It's.......... Rebekah Vardy's account.' This led to a tearful appearance by Rebekah on ITV's Loose Women in February 2020, where she claimed the stress caused severe anxiety attacks, hospitalising her three times. Coleen responded with a statement saying she did not want to 'engage in further public debate'.

Legal Proceedings and Settlement

In June 2020, Rebekah began libel proceedings against Coleen, alleging she suffered 'extreme distress, hurt, anxiety and embarrassment'. After years of court deliberations, the showdown settled with a ruling not in Rebekah's favour, involving a seven-figure sum. Rebekah agreed to pay £1,190,000 of Coleen's legal bill, plus £212,266 in assessment costs, totalling at least £1,402,266.20. MailOnline reports she has already paid portions, including £800,000 four years ago and £100,000 last year.

Coleen must also pay Rebekah £135,097.50 in costs under 2024 court orders, set off against what Rebekah owes. Breaking her silence after the case closed, Coleen wrote: 'The ruling yesterday in my favour finally brings this claim to an end, it's a relief and brings closure for my family and I. Throughout this long process, I am grateful that the judgments have consistently gone my way.'

She added: 'However, as I have always maintained, this claim did not need to be made or run for as long as it did. The time and money should have been put to better use. I want to thank my legal representatives, management, friends and family for their guidance and constant support.'

Through all these trials, Coleen Rooney's unwavering toughness shines as a testament to her character, proving she is far from a princess in a life full of real-world challenges.
