Angelina Jolie Says She 'Does Not Recognise' Her Country Amid 'Heavy Times'

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has expressed concern over the current state of the United States, saying she loves her country but does not 'recognise it' as the nation faces 'very heavy times'. Speaking at a press conference during the San Sebastian Film Festival on Sunday, the 50-year-old actress discussed the importance of freedom of expression.

Jolie's comments come in the aftermath of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a close associate of US President Donald Trump. The killing has sparked backlash and allegations of government censorship following the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show by ABC after remarks about reactions to Kirk's death.

'I love my country but I don't, at this time, recognise my country,' Jolie stated. She added: 'I've always lived internationally. My family's international, my friends, my life, my world view is equal, united, international. So anything anywhere that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms, and from anyone, I think is very dangerous.'

Jolie urged caution in public discourse, saying: 'These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually... These are very, very heavy times. We're all living it together.'

The actress attended the festival to discuss her latest film Couture, which tells the story of three women, including her character Maxine, who lands in Paris to direct a video for a fashion event and is hit with a grave medical diagnosis.
