Coronation Street Star Andy Whyment's Enduring Real-Life Love Story
While his character Kirk Sutherland has faced romantic turmoil on the cobbles of Weatherfield, actor Andy Whyment enjoys a stable and loving marriage off-screen with his wife Nichola. The couple's relationship began in 2004, but it wasn't love at first sight for Nichola, who initially had reservations about the soap star.
From Soap Fame to Personal Bliss
Andy Whyment joined the cast of Coronation Street in 2000, quickly becoming a fan favourite as Maria Connor's brother Kirk Sutherland. Known for his comedic one-liners and endearing personality, Kirk has navigated various dramatic storylines, including relationships with Fiz Brown and Beth Tinker. However, away from the television cameras, Andy's personal life has been marked by consistency and devotion.
The Unlikely Beginning of a Lasting Romance
Andy has openly expressed his admiration for Nichola, telling OK! magazine, "I've been punching above my weight for years - she's gorgeous! I'm a very lucky bloke." He recalled their early days, explaining that while he fancied her immediately, their connection took time to develop. "Then we copped off one night, and it wasn't too long before I realised she was the one I wanted to be with," he said, adding in his wedding speech that you simply know when you meet the right person.
Nichola's initial impression was less enthusiastic. She admitted that when they first met, she thought Andy was "a bit of an idiot" and it took her "a good few months" to fall in love. She elaborated, "He was single and sharing a place with Al (Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in Coronation Street). He was just giving it big time and not doing what I wanted him to do."
A Romantic Proposal and Star-Studded Wedding
Despite the slow start, their relationship flourished. Andy proposed to Nichola during a holiday in Monte Carlo, choosing a picturesque beach setting for the special moment. The couple then married in 2007 in a romantic ceremony attended by several of Andy's Coronation Street co-stars, including Tina O'Brien, Ryan Thomas, and Samia Longchambon.
Building a Family Together
Andy and Nichola have since built a family, welcoming two children: son Tom, born on October 12, 2008, and daughter Hollie, born on October 9, 2010. Andy has spoken proudly about his role as a father but confirmed they have completed their family. He revealed to OK! magazine, "There's no chance of having any more kids as I had the snip a few years ago. We said we wanted two kids, and we have been really fortunate to have a boy and a girl."
This real-life love story contrasts sharply with Kirk Sutherland's fictional romantic misadventures, showcasing Andy Whyment's commitment to his wife and children outside of his acting career. Coronation Street continues to air Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, where fans can watch Andy bring Kirk to life while knowing about his stable personal life behind the scenes.
