Comedian and television personality Alan Carr has made a poignant and deeply personal admission about the lasting impact of his divorce, confessing he now struggles to trust anyone.
A Heartfelt Confession Under the Greek Sun
The 49-year-old winner of Celebrity Traitors shared his emotional revelation during a relaxed conversation with his close friend and co-host, Amanda Holden, 54. The pair were filming for their BBC series, 'Amanda and Alan's Greek Job', enjoying Aperol Spritz cocktails while discussing life's rapid pace and their shared experiences of marital breakdown.
Reflecting on approaching his 50th birthday, Carr did not mention his ex-husband, Paul Drayton, by name but spoke broadly about the scars left by past relationships. "I mean, it's not decisions for me, but knowing your worth and the amount of times I've been walked over and people have demeaned me," he explained.
He expressed regret over not asserting himself more strongly in the past. "There's times that I wish I'd said, 'no', I wish I'd been a bit bolder and a bit... stronger. Yeah, a bit stronger."
The Lingering Shadow of Past Relationships
The core of Carr's current dilemma, he confessed to Holden, is a profound difficulty with trust. "I don't really trust anyone, really. That's the trouble. I think that is my main thing," he stated frankly. "But, yeah, it's just getting out there and trusting, isn't it?"
Carr was previously in a relationship with Paul Drayton for 14 years. The couple were together for a decade before marrying in a star-studded 2018 ceremony officiated by superstar Adele at her Los Angeles home. They later settled on a farm in West Sussex, but their relationship ultimately succumbed to the pressures of lockdown, leading to their divorce in 2022.
Reflections from an Ex and Traitors Triumph
During Carr's successful stint on Celebrity Traitors, which he went on to win, Drayton spoke to The Sun about their past dynamic. He described Carr as tolerant but capable of being "ruthless" in cutting people out if he felt taken advantage of.
"I don't want to say he's a good liar - as far as I know, he never lied to me during our relationship - but he will be good at playing the game," Drayton remarked, referencing the show's deceitful premise. He also joked about a controversial moment from the series, saying, "There were a few times in our relationship when I bet Alan wished he could have touched my face and bumped me off, to save him from the stress I was causing him."
Despite the heartache, Drayton fondly recalled that he "fell in love with him because he's funny and we used to make each other laugh." Carr's candid conversation with Amanda Holden, however, reveals the more vulnerable aftermath of their separation and his cautious outlook on future romance.
