Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty has reportedly been accused of hypocrisy by his former partner following his recent marriage to Holly Ramsay. The criticism centres on the couple's decision to adopt a new double-barrelled surname, a move that has sparked family tension and public scrutiny.
Ex-Partner's 'Bit Rich' Criticism
The swimmer's ex, Eiri Munroe, who shares a five-year-old son, George, with Peaty, is said to feel the name change decision is "a bit rich". According to a friend speaking to The Sun, Munroe believes there is a double standard at play. "It feels a bit rich to Eiri that Adam has been quick to change his name but didn’t allow her the same right for their son," the friend stated. "It appears Adam is being a bit hypocritical."
Despite the pointed criticism regarding the surname, the friend was quick to praise both Peaty as a father and his new wife's positive influence. "Holly has been such a positive influence on Adam. They both dote on George," they added. "Eiri knows she is lucky that George has a stepmum like Holly. Although she says Adam has double standards over changing his name, she can’t fault him as a dad." Munroe was also said to be proud to see her son standing by his father during the wedding ceremony at Bath Abbey.
Family Fallout and Wedding Day Drama
The name change controversy adds another layer to the significant family drama that has surrounded Peaty's wedding. His mother, Caroline Peaty, was notably absent from the lavish event following a major fallout. On the eve of the wedding, she expressed her profound hurt to the Daily Mail, stating, "I don't think they understand how much they have hurt me; it's as if they have cut my heart out."
The tension reportedly escalated on the wedding day itself, when Peaty allegedly received a stern text message from his aunt as he arrived at the abbey. The message read, "I hope you never suffer the depth of pain you have put your mother through, and despite it all, she loves you still." It concluded, "Shame on you both. Remember on this, your happiest day, and on each anniversary of your happiest day, that you hurt your mum so deeply her soul screams."
A source suggested the surname switch may have further upset his mother, but claimed it was always part of the couple's plan. "His parents may be upset, but it’s not intentional," the source explained.
Moving Forward as Newlyweds
Despite the familial discord, Adam Peaty and Holly Ramsay proceeded with their star-studded wedding, attended by guests including the Beckhams and 'Dragons' Den' star Sara Davies. The couple have now officially changed their Instagram handles to reflect their new joint surname, Peaty-Ramsay.
Having tied the knot, the newlyweds have been spotted jetting off on their honeymoon, where they are expected to see in the New Year together, marking the beginning of their married life amidst the ongoing public and private scrutiny of their choices.
