Viola Davis Collaborates with James Patterson on Provocative Abortion Novel
Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis has joined forces with prolific thriller author James Patterson to create a powerful new work of adult fiction that directly confronts America's deeply polarising abortion debate. The celebrated performer, who has achieved the rare EGOT status, views this literary venture as a natural extension of her storytelling expertise.
"I believe actors are fundamentally storytellers, and all people carry narratives within themselves," Davis explains. "Stories create connection, and I have always been passionate about that potential."
Judge Stone: A State-of-the-Nation Tale
Their debut collaborative novel, titled Judge Stone, unfolds in the small Alabama community of Union Springs. The plot centres on a local physician charged with murder after performing an illegal abortion on a thirteen-year-old girl, a case that rapidly fractures the town. Presiding over this explosive trial is Judge Mary Stone, an African American woman whose modest courtroom becomes the unexpected epicentre of national controversy.
This narrative arrives amid heightened tensions following the US Supreme Court's 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade, which dismantled the constitutional right to abortion and enabled numerous state-level bans. Patterson, whose novels have sold over 300 million copies worldwide, confirms the story draws heavily from contemporary realities.
"There is substantial reality inspiring this book," Patterson states. "Given Alabama's current near-total abortion prohibition, the scenario we depict could genuinely proceed to trial today. Tragic situations have emerged across multiple states since the legal reversal."
Why Address Such a Divisive Topic?
When questioned about their decision to tackle this contentious issue directly, Davis responds unequivocally: "Because we must discuss it—that is precisely why. I value discourse; there is much to learn from it. Our novel avoids simplistic black-and-white portrayals. Instead, it examines how this community becomes agitated through the lens of abortion, creating compelling drama."
Patterson was drawn to collaborate with Davis after reading her 2022 memoir, Finding Me, which he admired for its honesty, structure, and quality writing. While he has previously worked with celebrities like Dolly Parton and Bill Clinton, Patterson distinguishes Davis as "probably the best writer I've collaborated with."
"Her background in repeatedly crafting stories for film makes her exceptional at determining how to tell a narrative most effectively," he elaborates. "Unlike other collaborators, storytelling is her life's work. She consistently pushed me to refine our work, which was invaluable."
Literary Inspirations and Character Depth
Both authors acknowledge the influence of Harper Lee's classic To Kill a Mockingbird, noting parallels in how a Southern town's court case reveals broader societal truths. "Starting with a small town and a trial resembles To Kill a Mockingbird," Patterson observes. "Then, through modern elements like the internet, the story expands globally with multiple perspectives. We should discuss these issues rather than demonising each other."
Davis shaped the novel's central character significantly, crafting Judge Stone as a multifaceted figure who balances her professional duties with managing a family farm. "Judge Stone embodies beautiful contradictions and depth," Davis describes. "She demonstrates strength alongside vulnerability and honesty, courageously examining her own complexities."
Patterson adds: "Readers will discover her complicated nature through numerous dimensions. As Viola notes, she continually surprises us regarding her identity."
Beyond Message-Driven Storytelling
Neither author aims to deliver a heavy-handed moral message. "I avoid messages," Patterson asserts. "Messages imply wanting people to think a specific way, whereas I prefer to encourage thought itself." Davis concurs: "I similarly avoid messages; I simply invite readers to join us in Union Springs for 432 pages."
Regarding future projects, Patterson expresses confidence that Davis will author additional novels and does not dismiss a potential sequel. "Judge Stone survives this narrative—she certainly remains available for another story," he remarks.
Judge Stone by James Patterson and Viola Davis is published in hardback by Century, priced at £20, and is currently available.
