Teyana Taylor faced an awkward mishap at the 2026 Billboard Women in Music Awards, prompting her to abruptly walk off stage. The 35-year-old singer and actress was at the Hollywood Palladium to accept the Visionary Award and perform. However, upon taking the stage, Taylor discovered the teleprompter lacked her speech. At one point, the malfunctioning device instructed her to 'exit' the stage, leading her to storm off without a word.
Later, legendary star Dionne Warwick brought Taylor back before the show ended, allowing her to have her moment. Taylor returned in grey sweatpants and a matching hoodie to deliver her speech while taking jabs at Billboard. Initially, she waited awkwardly in silence, even dancing, as she twice requested the teleprompter. When told to 'ad lib,' she quipped, 'My speech is cute. They're gonna pull up this goddamn speech. Where's my speech?'
The 'One Battle After Another' star then noticed a message reading: 'Teyana Taylor we have no script for you. Everyone exit stage right.' She immediately walked off. After changing from a glamorous low-cut white dress into more comfortable attire, she returned with Warwick, who announced, 'We're back. And she has something to say.'
Taylor thanked Warwick and then deadpanned, 'Thank you to Billboard for this incredible honor,' before jokingly smacking her lips. She went on to thank God, noting there were 'so many moments I didn't really understand, even like the one now.' Reflecting on her 20-year music career, she said, 'This year marks 20 years in music for me. 20 years of showing up, even when it hurt, like now.'
She added, 'As women, we are visionaries by nature. We don't wait for permission. We create possibility. We take what we've been through, and we turn it into something the world can feel. We turn pain into purpose, silence into sound, dreams into something people can finally see. And that kind of vision, it doesn't change us. It changes everything around us.'
Emotionally, she spoke about her mother, Nikki Taylor, saying, 'You are my backbone, my safe place. It was so dope watching you curse them out back there,' referencing the backstage aftermath. Taylor then thanked Billboard for 'the accountability' and for acknowledging the error promptly.
Billboard issued an apology: 'We apologize to Teyana Taylor for the uncomfortable error and are grateful that she agreed to graciously return to the stage, delivering an incredible speech as this year's Visionary Award recipient.'
Fans amused by the outfit change commented, 'The sweatsuit! My girl was about to GO! Lol,' and 'She changed into her sweats and I'm here for it!!' Others called it a 'mess,' with one noting, 'Technical issues in 2026 is crazy.'
Taylor joined stars like Zara Larsson and Keke Palmer at the event. She initially wore a white corset with brown details, a fringed white skirt, lace-up pastel pink boots, and voluminous curls. For her performance of 'Bed of Roses,' she changed into a low-cut white silk gown.
