Francesca Zambello, WNO's artistic director, revealed the decision was precipitated by events in February when Donald Trump declared himself the chair of the Kennedy Centre. Subsequently, he dismissed and replaced its board and leadership. Zambello first indicated a potential departure in November, framing it as a direct consequence of this political intervention.
The impact on the opera's finances has been severe and immediate. Zambello reported that ticket sales are approximately 40% lower compared to levels before Trump's involvement. This decline is attributed to a widespread public boycott, with many former patrons vowing to stay away.
