Silvana Trevale's 'Venezuelan Youth' Photography Project
Photographer Silvana Trevale has unveiled Venezuelan Youth, a poignant photography project completed last year that offers a fresh perspective on her homeland. This collection, featuring shots taken over the past decade, aims to shift the focus from Venezuela's often-depicted crises to the resilience and complexities of its young people.
A Personal Journey of Hope and Healing
Trevale, who left Venezuela after being held at gunpoint, returns annually from London since 2017 to document the lives of youth. She spends extended time with her subjects and their families, building close relationships to capture authentic moments. Her work transforms personal trauma into a tribute to those remaining in the country, highlighting their strength and creativity.
In her own words, Trevale reflects on growing up in a nation of hardship, contrasting with stories of a splendid past from her parents and grandparents. "My Venezuela is different," she says, noting the loss of traditions and fractured faith among youth. Despite witnessing this from a position of privilege, she believes her generation carries post-traumatic stress from decades of pain, yet remains resilient.
Capturing Transition and Identity
The project delves into the abrupt transition from childhood to adulthood in Venezuela, where innocence is often stolen by the realities of a complex crisis. Trevale's images, such as Beso playero (2021) and Los Caracas (2022), depict young people playing and living, yet subtly aware of their challenging environment. She aims to show that Venezuela is more than a crisis—it is luminosity, playfulness, and resistance.
Through photography, Trevale has found healing, transmuting anger and sadness into a beautiful visual testimony. "We are still here," she asserts, emphasizing the infinite capacity of Venezuelans to create and love amidst deep fractures. The project serves as a collective contribution, offering an alternative, sensitive view of national identity.
