Sculptor Lloyd Le Blanc, Renowned for Bronze Flora and Fauna Works, Passes Away at 85

Lloyd Le Blanc, a celebrated sculptor famed for his intricate bronze depictions of flora and fauna, has died at the age of 85. His notable works include a giant artichoke sculpture that graces the gardens of Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons hotel in Oxfordshire, commissioned by chef Raymond Blanc.

Early Life and Artistic Journey

Born in Boston, USA, to Frank LeBlanc, a shipwright and fisherman, and Regina (née De Comeau), a housekeeper, Lloyd spent his early years in Nova Scotia, Canada, before returning to Boston. He pursued his passion for art by earning a fine arts degree and a master's degree from Yale University. After graduating, he lectured at Connecticut art college, where he met his future wife, Judith Holmes Drewry, a British student.

Founding a Bronze Foundry in Leicestershire

In 1972, after stints in the UK and San Francisco—where they built a foundry on a beach—Lloyd and Judith settled permanently on Judith's family farm in Saxby, Leicestershire. There, they established the Le Blanc Fine Art foundry, operating as full-time sculptors and managing the foundry business together. Lloyd was deeply involved in every phase of sculpture creation, from initial clay modelling to the final bronze pour, and he cast works for many other artists.

Legacy and Personal Life

Following Judith's death in 2011, Lloyd shifted to creating smaller pieces but remained active in his craft until his final bronze pour at age 85. Outside of sculpture, he enjoyed gardening, cooking, and political discussions, and was known as a great storyteller who made Saxby a welcoming hub for friends, family, and fellow artists. He is survived by his two children and a granddaughter.
