Photographer Michael Krupka Captures Graphic Chaos in Philadelphia Bike Shop

Michael Krupka, a photographer rather than a cyclist, had passed Philadelphia's Via Bicycle repair shop for years before he finally ventured inside. Drawn by the jumble of frames and parts in the front window, he embarked on an intentional photo hunt, armed with his Google Pixel 6a smartphone. Krupka recalls his childhood, saying, "My father was a machinist and when I was a child we had a workshop at home where he could repair pretty much anything mechanical he encountered. As an artsy kid, I didn't inherit those skills, but I do have an aesthetic attraction to machines and mechanical things."

Permission and Composition in the Tangled Scene

On that day, Krupka asked a man repairing a bike near the entrance for permission to photograph the shop. "He just shrugged and carried on," Krupka says. Initially hoping to capture the graphic chaos against the backlit window, he discovered an even more tangled scene with additional bikes in the foreground. He used these for the bottom third of the composition, creating a maze-like or jigsaw element. "The shot has something of a puzzle that might have interesting things to find within it," he explains.

Colour Choice and Nostalgic Impact

Krupka emphasizes that including colour would have substantially lessened the impact of the geometry of the frames, wheels, and seats. The blue-grey colour palette adds a layer of depth and energy, evoking a touch of nostalgia. "I'd wager that a great many of us rode bikes when we were young," he adds, connecting the image to universal childhood memories. This monochromatic approach enhances the visual complexity and emotional resonance of the photograph.

The image, titled Bike Shop, 2023, showcases Krupka's ability to find beauty in everyday mechanical chaos, using smartphone technology to create a compelling artistic statement. His work highlights the intersection of photography, art, and urban life, offering viewers a glimpse into the hidden aesthetics of a local repair shop.
