Cardiff City history-maker Rob Tankiewicz has signed his first professional contract with the club — and has already been tipped to become a top talent.
The attacking midfielder, who turned 17 on Friday, put pen to paper on a deal that will take effect from July 1 after progressing all the way through the Bluebirds' academy system, having joined at under-nine level.
Tankiewicz made history earlier this season when he became Cardiff City's youngest-ever first-team player during a Vertu Trophy clash with Newport County in October 2025. That record only lasted for part of the evening, however, before team-mate Axel Donczew broke it later in the match.
The teenager's rapid rise continued when he made his league debut in April, coming off the bench in Cardiff's 5-1 victory over Northampton Town. He has also represented Wales at youth level and most recently featured for the under-19s ahead of their Euros campaign this month.
Speaking after signing professional terms, Tankiewicz said: "It's not a bad birthday! I'm over the moon to sign my first contract and remain at the club. I've been here since U9s, so going into this season I'm definitely very excited and looking forward to the campaign ahead. A massive thank you to the fans. All the support has been massively appreciated. I'm definitely looking forward to showing what I'm capable of. It's a great time to be at the club, especially with the manager. I hope I excite the fans more this season and show what I'm about. It's been a long journey but through every coach and every staff member I've worked with, they've all given me plenty of support and I'm very grateful for all the opportunities and for the development, to push me and give me exposure."
The new deal comes after Under-21s boss Purse highlighted Tankiewicz as one of the academy prospects most likely to make an impact in the years ahead. Speaking to WalesOnline last month, Purse said: "I think Rob Tankiewicz is going to be a real good talent. If you look at him physically as a first-year scholar, he gets it. He understands it. Some of the data that he can produce as a first-year scholar is really top."
Purse has already fast-tracked Tankiewicz's development by exposing him to Under-21 football at a young age and believes he possesses the attributes to thrive in Brian Barry-Murphy's system. "Rob's probably a running eight, I would say," Purse explained. "He's very similar to Joel Colwill. He can drop deep and get on the ball, can get you playing if you need him to. If he wants to run beyond, he can do it relentlessly."
The academy chief also urged Tankiewicz and fellow youngster Donczew to be ruthless in their pursuit of first-team opportunities. "When we come back in the summer, I'll be saying to Rob and Axel: they're your two targets, can you go and get their shirts? That's what it's all about as young players coming through. You're after the players' shirts, who's playing in front of you. The more ruthless ones will get it. The others probably won't make it at the level they should do."
Tankiewicz now looks set to be given the chance to continue his development under Barry-Murphy after committing his future to the Bluebirds, with Cardiff hopeful another highly-rated academy product can follow the path forged by youngsters such as Joel Colwill and Cian Ashford.
