A furious father has hit out at his daughter's school after it sent a letter home referring to one of her classmates as 'non-binary'—without consulting parents first.
The dad, who wishes to remain anonymous, branded the move 'woke nonsense' after his 11-year-old daughter came home confused by the message.
'No Parental Consent'
The letter, sent by the school, explained that one pupil in the class identified as non-binary and asked students to use 'they/them' pronouns when addressing them.
'I was shocked,' the father told The Mirror. 'No one asked parents if we were okay with this. My daughter didn’t even understand what it meant—she came home asking if her friend was now a boy and a girl.'
Backlash Over 'Woke' Policies
The incident has reignited debates over how schools handle gender identity issues, with critics accusing institutions of pushing 'woke ideology' onto young children.
'Schools should focus on education, not social engineering,' the dad fumed. 'If a child wants to identify differently, that’s a discussion for parents—not something to be forced on classmates without warning.'
Supporters of inclusive education argue that acknowledging diverse identities helps create a welcoming environment for all students.
What Do the Experts Say?
Child psychologists suggest that while inclusivity is important, schools should communicate transparently with parents to avoid confusion.
'Children at this age are still developing their understanding of identity,' said Dr. Emily Carter, a child development specialist. 'Clear, age-appropriate explanations—and parental involvement—are key.'
The school has yet to comment publicly on the controversy.
