Teacher's Shame: Maths Tutor Jailed for Inappropriate Relationship with Sixth-Form Pupil After Final Exam
Teacher jailed for affair with sixth-form pupil after exams

A Surrey-based maths teacher has been handed a 16-month prison sentence after engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a former sixth-form pupil mere days after she completed her final A-Level examination.

Martin Davis, a 38-year-old married educator, was found to have exploited his position of trust at a secondary school in Surrey. The illicit affair commenced shortly after the victim, then 18, finished her exams in the summer of 2022.

The court heard how Davis initiated contact via Instagram, leading to a series of clandestine meetings. The relationship escalated quickly, with the pair meeting at various locations including a local pub and even Davis's marital home while his wife was away.

Breach of Trust and Professional Boundaries

Prosecutors emphasised the significant breach of professional boundaries and the abuse of trust inherent in the teacher-pupil dynamic, even after the formal educational relationship had ended.

Judge Sarah Mallett, presiding over the case at Guildford Crown Court, condemned Davis's actions, stating he had "abused the trust placed in him as a teacher" and had "taken advantage of a young person."

Impact on the Victim and Fallout

The court was told of the profound emotional and psychological impact the affair had on the young woman, who must now navigate the aftermath of the relationship.

Davis, who pleaded guilty to the charge of engaging in sexual activity with a person in a position of trust, has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years and is subject to a restraining order.

This case has sent shockwaves through the local community and serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding protocols within educational institutions.
