Teacher Fined for Inappropriate Conduct with Pupil
A former head of science has been ordered to pay £500 after admitting to messaging an underage pupil on social media and supplying her with alcohol. Richard James Pugh, 41, was employed at Llangatwg Community School in Neath, South Wales, when the incidents occurred.
Unwanted Gifts and a Signed Christmas Card
Merthyr Magistrates Court heard that Pugh gave the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, a Christmas card signed with a kiss from 'your best buddy'. The court was told he also placed a gift bag inside her school bag containing a can of Malibu and pineapple cocktail, biscuits, and cold coffee. The pupil stated in evidence that she found the items upon returning to school after the Christmas break.
The child told the court that Pugh's actions left her feeling "vulnerable" and "exposed", adding that his unwanted attention caused her to constantly look over her shoulder and fear being judged. She said the situation impacted her education and made her feel unsafe within the school environment.
Teacher's Changing Story and Court Rebuke
Pugh, of Regent Street, Aberaman, initially pleaded not guilty to supplying a minor with alcohol. He later changed his plea to guilty but denied presenting the items in a gift bag. He claimed the pupil had helped herself from a stock of unwanted gifts and classroom items, including the alcohol, which he alleged was purchased for his cleaner.
District Judge Neil Thomas strongly criticised Pugh's testimony, stating "there was nothing of any credibility in his evidence and he could not tell the truth even at this late stage." The judge also rebuked the former teacher for tainting the trust inherent in his profession and attempting to shift blame onto the child.
In addition to the £500 fine, Pugh was ordered to pay a £200 court surcharge and £650 in prosecution costs. The payments are to be made at a rate of £25 per month. The court also granted a 12-month restraining order, prohibiting Pugh from contacting the pupil directly, indirectly, or posting about her on social media.
