Three Quarters of Brits Blame Screens for Children's Shrinking Vocabularies
Brits Blame Screens for Kids' Shrinking Vocabularies

New research has revealed a widespread concern among British adults about the state of children's language development, with three quarters of the population believing that young people's vocabularies are shrinking compared to previous generations.

Survey Reveals Widespread Concern Over Language Skills

According to a comprehensive nationwide survey commissioned by malt loaf brand Soreen, seven in ten Brits (70%) believe today's children use significantly fewer words than those from earlier generations. The research further indicates that 67% of adults think children now struggle to express themselves confidently in everyday situations.

The study highlights a growing anxiety among parents and educators about the impact of modern technology on language acquisition. An overwhelming 74% of respondents directly blame screen habits for this perceived decline, pointing to phones, tablets, laptops, televisions and other digital devices as factors that hinder rather than support speech development.

The Screen Time Debate Intensifies

While most parents acknowledge their responsibility for building vocabulary at home, the survey reveals a concerning confidence gap. Only a small minority of parents feel adequately equipped with the knowledge and tools to effectively support their child's language development, despite recognising the importance of this foundational skill.

Susie Dent, the renowned broadcaster, author and lexicographer who has partnered with Soreen on this initiative, commented on the findings: "Evidence suggests that around four in ten children are falling behind in their vocabulary development. Many parents will know that reading, one of the key ways to improve our word power, is often being sacrificed to screen time."

Soreen's Innovative Response to the Challenge

In response to these concerning findings, Soreen has launched an innovative partnership with Susie Dent aimed at boosting the nation's word power through their new Wordplay initiative. Limited-edition packs of Soreen Lunchbox Loaves now include special inserts featuring:

  • New and interesting words carefully selected by language experts
  • Clear definitions to aid understanding
  • Short origin stories that provide context and historical background

These lunchbox loaves contain a source of iron to support focus and learning, creating what the company describes as "the perfect moment to champion vocabulary in a fun and accessible way."

Bringing Joy Back to Language Learning

Susie Dent elaborated on the thinking behind the Wordplay initiative: "But learning comes in many different forms, and we can find it even in the smallest moments of the day, including snack-time. From 'kerfuffle' to 'hullabaloo', the words selected by Soreen will make families smile, wonder and, crucially, talk together about the magic of the dictionary. Wordplay is all about bringing the joy back to language."

Liz Jacobs, marketing director at Soreen, explained the practical thinking behind the campaign: "Parents are looking for ways to support learning at home, but time is tighter than ever. Wordplay fits seamlessly into family life with a snack, a smile, and a new word to try out together."

Nationwide Rollout and Magical Word Selection

The nationwide launch will see one-and-a-half million limited-edition packs rolling out across major UK supermarkets, making the Wordplay initiative accessible to families throughout the country. The packs are available now in five-packs of Soreen Lunchbox Loaves.

The Wordplay selection features some of the most engaging and magical words in the English language, specifically chosen to spark curiosity and conversation. Among the featured terms are:

  1. Snarf - to gobble something up quickly and happily
  2. Kerfuffle - a small commotion
  3. Quizzical - indicating mild or amused puzzlement
  4. Splendiferous - excellent, or very beautiful and special
  5. Zany - amusingly unconventional and idiosyncratic

This initiative represents a creative response to what many see as a growing educational challenge, blending nutritional support with language development in a format designed to fit seamlessly into busy family routines.
