Olympic Champion's Daughter Stranded in Dubai Amid Middle East Conflict
The teenage daughter of British Olympic champion Andy Turner has found herself trapped in Dubai after her first solo international trip turned into a nightmare scenario when conflict erupted in the region. Carmen Gaynor-Turner, 19, from Bramhall, Stockport, had flown to the United Arab Emirates last Thursday for a five-night stay to explore a potential job opportunity as an estate agent.
Dream Holiday Descends into Terror
Within just twenty-four hours of her arrival, Carmen's dream getaway transformed into a terrifying ordeal after former US President Donald Trump launched a comprehensive military assault on Iran, triggering retaliatory strikes across multiple Middle Eastern nations. The young woman has described spending frightening nights taking shelter in her AirBnB apartment at Dubai Marina as Iranian drones and missiles were intercepted overhead.
"I came out here to see if it was somewhere I could see myself living and if I would be OK on my own," Carmen explained. "Now I'm just desperate to get home."
Apartment Shakes During Missile Interceptions
The former Hazel Grove High School student recounted how her tower block trembled during the initial wave of strikes on Saturday. "I could hear bangs all day, but I thought it was building works," she said. "Then I read that they were missiles, but I couldn't see them initially. Then on Saturday they were shaking my apartment. The windows were shaking. You could see the missiles that were being shot down."
Carmen described the constant disruption: "The missile alerts were going off all night. You got about two hours sleep at a time. This morning when an alert went off you could see all the children running inside. It's terrifying for them."
Flight Cancellations and Relocation
Originally scheduled to return home on Tuesday, Carmen's flight was cancelled along with thousands of others amid the escalating conflict. She has now secured a seat on an Emirates flight to Manchester scheduled for the early hours of Sunday morning and is anxiously hoping it will depart as planned.
After spending a week in her original AirBnB, Carmen relocated on Thursday to stay with a family friend who owns a property in Damac Hills, approximately twenty minutes inland from Dubai Marina. This move positions her further away from where the majority of strikes have been targeted, though she remains cautious.
Life Under Threat in Dubai
"Online you can see people saying everyone is carrying on as normal," Carmen observed. "Certain areas are, people are just strolling around, but then when the missiles start it's just dead. There's no cars on the roads and most people are staying inside."
The psychological toll has been significant for the young traveler: "It's really difficult. I am away from all my family. It's my first trip away by myself. It's affected me massively, but I don't want to panic anyone further. I know I'm safe, but at the same time it is terrifying."
Family's Desperate Concern and Backup Plans
Carmen's father, Andy Turner, is the former European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles champion who represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games and won a World Championship bronze medal. Following his retirement from athletics in 2014, the 45-year-old turned to bodybuilding and currently works as a personal trainer at an upmarket gym in Altrincham.
Speaking from the family home in Stockport on Friday morning, Carmen's mother Natalie Gaynor-Turner, 46, revealed the family is preparing contingency plans should Sunday's flight be cancelled. "It's just your worst nightmare," Natalie said. "I am a wreck. I'm not sleeping. We're trying to keep busy and keep working, but it's just so stressful."
The concerned mother added: "She's very independent but I don't think anyone would be able to deal with this on their own. She shouldn't have to go through it." Among the backup options being considered is the possibility of Andy traveling to the Middle East to be with his daughter and assist in her return home.
