Two males have been charged with attempted murder after a woman was left fighting for her life following a hit-and-run incident in Blyth, Northumberland. Police were called to reports that a vehicle had been driven towards a group of women on Keelmans Terrace, near the junction with Beaumont Street, at around 1:25am on Friday.
The Incident
The vehicle struck two women in their 30s, leaving one with serious injuries. She was taken to hospital and remains in a life-threatening condition. The other woman sustained minor injuries. The car fled the scene and was later found burnt out in the High Pitt area of Cramlington.
Charges and Arrests
On Wednesday afternoon, a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with attempted murder. Corey Charters, 20, of no fixed abode, was also charged with attempted murder, driving without a valid licence, and driving with no insurance. Both are due to appear before North Tyneside Magistrates' Court in North Shields on Thursday morning. A 21-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released on bail.
Police Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Jason Henry, of Northumbria Police's Major Investigation Team, said: "The charges brought against these two individuals are a big step forward in our investigation, but that does not mean the enquiry is finished. We’re still looking to understand the events leading up to the alleged assault, and we especially want to hear from those who might have doorbell, CCTV, or dash cam footage."
Police are particularly interested in the movements of a dark-coloured 2007 registered Honda SUV believed to have been in the area between 1am and 1:30am on Friday. They also believe the victims were involved in an earlier altercation on or near Stephen Street between 1:15am and 1:20am with occupants of the same vehicle, though no injuries were reported. The vehicle was found burnt out at around 3pm on Friday, June 12.
Appeal for Information
Detective Chief Inspector Henry urged the public not to speculate on the circumstances, especially as charges are live, and to respect the legal process.
