Two individuals arrested following a stabbing in Piccadilly Gardens have been released on bail, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP). The incident occurred during a 'large disturbance' on Thursday evening.
Incident Details
Emergency services responded to reports of a disturbance at around 7:20 PM on June 18. Officers discovered a man in his 20s with injuries consistent with a knife attack. He was transported to the hospital, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing.
Arrests and Bail
A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, while a 24-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of affray. Both have since been released on bail, as confirmed by a GMP spokesperson on Saturday morning.
Dispersal Order
Following the incident, a dispersal order was authorized for Piccadilly Gardens and surrounding areas. The order was in effect until 8:40 AM on Friday and covered Princess Street, Miller Street, Great Ancoats Street, the Mancunian Way, Fairfield Street, and Whitworth Street.
Witness Account
Tony Farrell, a 55-year-old resident of the Northern Quarter, witnessed the aftermath. He described hearing sirens from all directions and seeing a man on the ground receiving first aid from police officers. Paramedics and detectives also attended the scene. Farrell expressed shock but noted that such incidents are not surprising in the area.
The initial cordon, which included the track near Piccadilly Gardens tram stop, caused disruptions to Metrolink services.
