A five-year-old girl and her infant brother have tragically lost their lives after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street on their way home from school in south-west Sydney, Australia.
Fatal Collision in Cabramatta
On Wednesday afternoon, Katherine and her brother Harry were walking across a road at an intersection in Cabramatta with their 33-year-old mother, Sok Ram, when a vehicle hit them. Katherine had just excitedly shared news with her mother about a school award she had earned, which she was scheduled to receive on Friday.
Despite the best efforts of bystanders and paramedics, both children died from their injuries. Their mother was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver, a 56-year-old man, was uninjured and arrested but not charged. He was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Heroic Bystanders
Several motorists stopped and overturned the vehicle that had collided with the children. Others performed CPR in a desperate attempt to save their lives. Paramedics treated the children at the scene before rushing them to hospital, but they later succumbed to their injuries.
Family friend Patrick Te described the final moments: "As they were crossing the road together, heading back to the car, an oncoming vehicle suddenly struck both Katherine and the pram where Harry was sitting. A mother not only lost a child - she lost both of her children, her only two children."
Community Response
NSW Police Acting Commander Timothy Calman praised the community's response: "The community involved here this afternoon was phenomenal. We've had a number of motorists that actually stopped, and collectively have moved the vehicle onto its side, tipped the car over, in order to get one of the children from underneath the vehicle."
Police are seeking to speak with four of the eight men who helped at the scene to piece together how the crash occurred.
Local Concerns
Neighbours described the junction as "an accident waiting to happen" due to poor visibility and speeding vehicles. A man living two houses from the crash site called it "horrible" and "tragic." Acting Commander Calman noted it was "probably one of the most confronting scenes that police have come across involving young children."
Fundraiser for the Family
A GoFundMe campaign set up by Patrick Te has raised over AUD$167,800 (£88,704) in 17 hours to help the family financially as they navigate their heartbreaking loss.
