A six-year-old girl who died after being hit by a van in Newry has been named as Kourtney Khloe McCormick. The collision occurred at approximately 9.25pm on Sunday, June 21, in the Springfarm Heights area, involving a black Ford Tourneo van. Kourtney had just turned six years old, according to police.
Arrest and Investigation
The driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody. Detective Inspector Stewart from the Police Service’s Collision Investigation Unit stated: “Officers attended, and the driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene. She remains in custody at this time as enquiries continue into the circumstances of the collision.” The Carnagat Road remains closed at its junctions with Springfarm Heights and Stony Hill.
Appeal for Witnesses
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference 1552 21/06/26, or submit information online at http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/. Detective Inspector Stewart added: “Police would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage of what happened, which could assist with our enquiries.”

The death has led to an outpouring of grief in the local community and across Northern Ireland. Newry and Armagh DUP MLA Gareth Wilson expressed his profound sadness, saying: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of such a young child following this devastating incident. My thoughts and prayers are with the girl's family circle, friends, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss. The loss of a young life is always particularly heartbreaking, and it will be felt right across the wider community.”
