Five Injured in Edinburgh Knife Rampage

Five men were injured in Edinburgh after a man allegedly wielding a knife rampaged through the streets on Friday, June 19. Several of the victims are from the Muslim community, according to Muslim engagement group MEND Scotland.

Details of the Attacks

Police received multiple calls from terrified members of the public about violent attacks, threats, robbery, and vandalism across the west of Edinburgh and Leith. Two men were found injured in the Sighthill area at 8.50pm, reportedly near Broomhill Mosque. They were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

A third man, understood to be an Asian Deliveroo driver, was later found injured on Telford Road. Two other men were attacked on Leith Walk. The delivery rider was left injured on the pavement.

Arrest and Investigation

Local police officers armed with a taser confronted and detained the suspect, a 36-year-old man who remains in custody. The five victims, aged 22, 24, 27, and 29, sustained a range of injuries, with three taken to hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police were also called to retailers across the West and North of the city regarding vandalism. Counter Terrorism Policing Scotland is investigating the incidents.

Witness Accounts and Social Media Footage

Footage emerged on social media showing a man being arrested on Leith Walk, handcuffed and shouting, "I'm protecting the f***ing country." Another video showed a topless man carrying a large blade while walking along Leith Walk, and later smashing windows of Origano Cafe & Pizzeria. A staff member said, "A man ran up and smashed the windows. We were able to put the shutter down quickly to protect everyone. It's a very frightening situation."

Police Response

Leith Walk was closed following the incident, with diversions in place. Police Scotland said local policing patrols will maintain a visible presence in the coming days. A Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) has been set up for witnesses to provide information.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton said: "This was a shocking attack. My first thoughts are with those injured. There is no place for racism or faith-based hate in Scotland. Officers responded to multiple reports before arresting a man. We are supported by Counter Terrorism Policing and working under the Crown Office."
