Merseyside Police have confirmed that a delivery driver acted in self-defence when he was attacked by a group of 20 youths in Bootle. The incident occurred on Edward Jenner Avenue at around 6:50 PM on Friday, June 19.
Details of the Incident
The driver was riding his bike towards an alleyway when the group stopped him and attempted to grab his bicycle. According to police, the driver tried to escape, but the youths began throwing punches at him. In response, he defended himself while trying to get away.
Police Investigation and Witness Account
Officers arrived at the scene and observed the youths behaving aggressively, shouting at the driver and attempting to confront him. An independent witness confirmed that the youths were assaulting the driver, forcing him to act in self-defence.
Detective Superintendent Louise Birchall stated: "We have carried out extensive enquiries and can confirm from an independent witness that the delivery driver was defending himself after being confronted by 20 youths. We are satisfied that he acted in self-defence."
Warning Against Misinformation
Police have urged the public not to share rumours or misinformation circulating on social media. One post falsely claimed the driver had attacked two schoolboys for riding their bikes too fast. Birchall added: "We would urge people not to share rumours or misinformation which creates a false narrative of what actually took place."
A Merseyside Police spokesperson reiterated: "We ask people to avoid spreading rumours and misinformation regarding this incident."
