Algeria has reportedly lodged a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the officiating in their 3-0 World Cup defeat to Argentina, claiming Lionel Messi should have been sent off before scoring a hat-trick. The complaint also highlights an alleged elbow by Alexis Mac Allister on Ibrahim Maza.
Messi's Controversial Challenge
During the first half, Messi stood on the calf of Algeria captain Aissa Mandi, an incident that many believe warranted a red card. Referee Szymon Marciniak, who officiated the 2022 World Cup final, did not even issue a yellow card. At that point, Messi had already opened the scoring and went on to complete his hat-trick as Argentina cruised to victory.
Algeria's Official Complaint
Reuters, citing a source with direct knowledge, reported on Friday that Algeria had submitted a complaint about the match officiating. The Algerian federation alleges that both Mac Allister and Messi should have been punished. Marciniak was within a metre of Mac Allister when he struck Maza with his elbow.
South Africa Coach Weighs In
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos referenced the Messi incident while explaining why they will appeal a three-match suspension for Themba Zwane. Broos said: "When I see what happened with Messi, I don't agree with what happened to my player. Themba tried to get over a Mexican player, and he put his arm over his shoulder. That's all he does. And you get a red card and a three-game suspension? This is much too severe."
Former Referee's Opinion
Former FIFA-listed referee Mark Halsey also criticised the decision. He told the Sun: "Messi did endanger the player's safety. The ball is not within playing distance, so it's not serious foul play. It has to be violent conduct because it comes down as a stamp. I was surprised VAR didn't recommend a review, especially compared to the Zwane incident. For me, Messi was a very lucky player."
Social Media Backlash
The incident sparked controversy on social media, with many believing Messi should have seen red. Some made unfounded allegations of FIFA rigging the tournament. Pundit Nedum Onouha said on ESPN FC: "It probably should have been a red card. The referee missed it, but for VAR to look at it and say it's fine, I think it's worthy of a red card."
