Background of the Riots

Violence erupted following the deaths of two teenage boys, Kyrees Sullivan (16) and Harvey Evans (15), in an electric bike collision on May 22, 2023. Approximately 150 people participated in the riot, which involved hours of violence and vandalism on and near Wilson Road in the west Cardiff suburb.

The mothers of the teenagers attempted to reach their children but were blocked by police. Grief and shock turned to anger as rumors spread that police were responsible for the deaths, as the boys had been pursued by a police van earlier.

Police set up a cordon to protect the scene, but the crowd grew hostile, escalating into a full riot. Hundreds of officers were deployed as missiles, including bottles, bricks, plasterboard, and fireworks, were thrown. Cars were overturned and set alight, doors were thrown at officers, mattresses were burned, and petrol bombs were used, with one officer engulfed in flames. Helicopters filmed the chaos.

Defendants Due for Sentencing

On Wednesday, the following defendants are scheduled to be sentenced: Lee Robinson, Tyler Stapleon, Michaela Gonzales, Ashdon O'Dare, Jordan Bratcher, Harvey James, Luke Williams, Jaydan Baston, Keiron Beccano, and McKenzie Pring. They are among 30 individuals facing sentencing for their roles in the riots.
