The family of a retired dental surgeon have paid a moving tribute after he died in a horrific hit-and-run incident where he was carried on the roof of a car for approximately a mile.
A Tragic End on Gads Hill
Eighty-nine-year-old Thomas Wallace, known as Tom, was struck by a grey Mercedes estate on the A289 Gads Hill in Gillingham, Kent. The shocking collision occurred on Monday, 29 December.
Instead of stopping, the driver continued, with Mr Wallace tragically carried on the vehicle for around a mile. He was later found on Grange Road. The Mercedes was located nearby after its occupants had fled the scene.
Family's Heartfelt Tribute to a Life of Service
In a statement, Mr Wallace's grieving family said he "deserved a better end to his life". They highlighted his long and dedicated career as a dental surgeon, his close-knit family life, and his extensive charity work, painting a picture of a man much loved and respected in his community.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local area, with residents describing the details as horrifying.
Charges Brought as Investigation Continues
Kent Police have since charged two men in connection with the fatal road traffic accident. Albert Matraxhiu, 28, faces multiple charges including:
- Death by dangerous driving
- Perverting the course of justice
- A number of other driving offences related to the event
Erald Paci, 29, has been charged with perverting the course of justice. Both men were remanded in custody following a court appearance and are next due to face a hearing on 30 January.
The police investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision remains ongoing, as the community mourns the loss of a respected former dentist.
