Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard, who portrays Carl Webster, has teased the 'life-changing' fallout following his character's attack by Ronnie Bailey. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Howard hinted at significant consequences stemming from the events of murder week on the ITV soap.
Attack and Aftermath
Last week, viewers saw Carl left lifeless after Ronnie crushed him with a car at the garage. This came after Carl attempted to tamper with the vehicle. Ronnie subsequently dropped Carl at the hospital, leaving his fate uncertain. However, Monday's episode confirmed Carl's survival, and Howard has now offered insight into what lies ahead for the villain.
While avoiding specifics, Howard stated: 'I think the events that went on through this week will be life-changing for him. Hopefully there's a chance for him to redeem himself a little bit.' This suggests a potential shift in Carl's character, moving away from his devious ways.
Hopes for Redemption
Howard expressed a desire for Carl to retain his cheeky and chaotic nature while finding redemption. 'As long as he can still be an annoying little brat, I'm happy to have a bit of humility,' he said. Reflecting on Carl's past misdeeds, including robbing cars and hit-and-runs, Howard noted that Carl's love for his mother, Debbie, was his only saving grace. However, Carl has since exploited Debbie's dementia, blackmailing her, which Howard found harder to portray. He hopes Carl will learn from his mistakes.
Future on the Street
Amid rumours of Carl's potential exit following a social media post, Howard addressed the possibility. 'I would be very grateful for the time I have had here. I've been very lucky to play the part I have done. He is so much fun to play. It's much better I do these things in character than in real life!' He added that being involved in Coronation Street was a dream and expressed a desire not to be killed off just yet.
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
