Tragic Accident Claims Life of Nine-Year-Old Ohio Boy
A community in Green, Ohio, is in mourning after a devastating accident claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy. Samuel Rife was struck by a vehicle while playing baseball outside his home on Friday afternoon.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to reports from the Akron Beacon Journal, the tragic event occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Peachwood Way. Samuel was retrieving a baseball when he was hit by a 2025 Jeep Wrangler. The Summit County Sheriff's Office confirmed the driver was an 81-year-old man. Officials stated that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors in the accident, describing it as a deeply unfortunate occurrence.
Samuel's mother, Madeline, was inside their home at the time. She did not witness the collision but rushed outside upon hearing the commotion. "I went running outside," Madeline told the Beacon Journal. "I didn't have my cell phone on me. One of my neighbors called 911 and helped with the first CPR attempts."
Immediate Aftermath and Hospitalization
Neighbors and passersby immediately attempted to assist the young boy. Samuel was swiftly transported to Akron Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His father, The Reverend J. Harlen Rife, was at a friend's house with his seven-year-old daughter, Marta, when the crash occurred.
The Reverend expressed the family's profound grief but also extended compassion toward the driver. "From what we understand, this was a really unfortunate accident. We understand they were devastated as well. We are still processing things, but we hope to meet with them," he said, adding that their "hearts also go out to the driver."
Community Response and Investigation
The Summit Metro Crash Response Team is actively investigating the incident. Charges are pending the outcome of this investigation. In the meantime, the community has united in support of the Rife family.
A vigil was held on Sunday, where residents gathered to mourn Samuel's death. Attendees also offered prayers for the driver involved. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign was established in Samuel's memory, raising over $20,000. The funds are designated to support Family Support Specialists at Green City Schools.
The fundraising page highlighted Samuel's character, noting, "Sam was a passionate supporter of food security for all and volunteered at local food distributions in Akron and Canton."
