The Public Prosecutor's Office announced the charges on Monday, detailing a serious plot that led to the cancellation of three shows.
Alleged Links to Islamic State and Bomb-Making Instructions
According to the Vienna public prosecutors' statement, the unnamed defendant declared allegiance to the Islamic State group by disseminating propaganda material and videos through various messaging services. Prosecutors further accuse the individual of obtaining online instructions for constructing a shrapnel bomb using triacetone triperoxide, an explosive commonly associated with IS. Authorities state that a small quantity of this explosive was actually produced by the suspect.
Multiple Attempts to Procure Illegal Weapons
The criminal case highlights the defendant's "several attempts" to purchase weapons illegally from outside Austria and smuggle them into the country. These efforts, detailed in the prosecution's filing, underscore the planned scale and intent of the alleged attack. A spokesperson for the Vienna public prosecutors' office confirmed to The Associated Press that the defendant is currently in custody, with Austrian media identifying the suspect as Beran A., arrested in August 2024.
Concert Cancellations and International Intelligence Cooperation
In response to the foiled plot, Austrian authorities cancelled three planned Taylor Swift performances in Vienna during August 2024. The decision was informed by intelligence provided by the United States. Then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated in August 2024, "The United States has an enduring focus on our counterterrorism mission. We work closely with partners all over the world to monitor and disrupt threats. And so as part of that work, the United States did share information with Austrian partners to enable the disruption of a threat to Taylor Swift’s concerts there in Vienna."
