A British teenager has been formally charged with arson following a disturbing firebomb attack on the Kenton United Synagogue in north-west London. The incident, which occurred late on Saturday, 18 April, has been claimed by the pro-Iran Islamic group Ashab Al-Yamin, also known as the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right.
Details of the Attack and Arrests
The arson attack took place at approximately 23:35 hours at the Kenton United Synagogue, located on Shaftsbury Avenue in Harrow. According to police reports, a firebomb was launched through a window of the synagogue, causing minor damage to the premises. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among congregants or staff.
Around midnight, Metropolitan Police officers conducting routine security checks at local synagogues discovered the crime scene. They immediately alerted the London Fire Brigade, who attended to assess and secure the area. The swift response helped prevent further damage and ensured public safety.
Arrests and Charges
In connection with the attack, two individuals were arrested on Sunday, 19 April: a 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy. Both were taken into custody at a London police station on suspicion of arson reckless as to whether life was endangered. The 19-year-old man has since been released on bail pending further enquiries, while the 17-year-old teenager has been charged with arson.
The charged teenager has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 21 April.
