Top Jockey Banned for Eight Days After Royal Ascot Stewards' Ruling
Top Jockey Banned for Eight Days After Royal Ascot Ruling

Royal Ascot has been rocked by a significant disciplinary decision as top jockey Christophe Soumillon received an eight-day ban following a controversial ride. The Belgian rider was punished after stewards ruled he rode Puerto Rico in a manner designed to benefit a stablemate during Tuesday's St James's Palace Stakes, one of the feature races on the opening day of the meeting.

Stewards Investigate Controversial Maneuver

Soumillon was riding the Aidan O'Brien-trained outsider Puerto Rico, while stablemate Gstaad, ridden by Ryan Moore, started among the favourites for the prestigious contest. Stewards launched an investigation after reviewing race footage and concluded that Soumillon had moved Puerto Rico away from the rail entering the home straight, creating a clear passage for Gstaad on the inside.

Although Gstaad ultimately finished second behind winner Bow Echo, officials ruled Soumillon's actions had been intended to give an advantage to another horse from the same stable.

Official Statement Released

A statement released by the stewards read: "An enquiry was held to consider whether C Soumillon, the rider of Puerto Rico, rode in a manner to benefit Gstaad and in doing so caused minimal interference to Power Blue."

"Soumillon was suspended for eight days for riding his mount in such a way that intended to give an advantage to another horse from the same stable, in that he moved his mount away from the rail thereby ensuring a clear run for Gstaad on his inside."

Race Details and Additional Penalties

Soumillon, widely regarded as one of the best jockeys in the sport, had set the pace aboard Puerto Rico throughout much of the mile contest. The incident occurred as the field entered the straight, with stewards determining that his manoeuvre effectively opened a route along the inside rail for Gstaad and Ryan Moore.

The race itself was won by Bow Echo under Billy Loughnane, who held off Gstaad in a thrilling finish. Moore also found himself in trouble with the stewards and received a three-day suspension for careless riding at the start of the race. Officials ruled that the rider had allowed Gstaad to drift left without taking sufficient corrective action, causing interference to several rivals including Bow Echo, Talk Of New York and Puerto Rico.

Major Talking Point at Royal Ascot

The ruling involving Soumillon quickly became one of the major talking points from the opening day of Royal Ascot, with racing fans debating the tactics employed by O'Brien's team. O'Brien has often used front-running horses to ensure a strong pace for more fancied stablemates, but the latest incident prompted stewards to intervene and issue one of the meeting's most notable disciplinary decisions.
