The Football Association (FA) sent a cease and desist letter to supermarket chain Iceland for a marketing stunt that saw three stores temporarily renamed 'England' ahead of the World Cup clash between England and Argentina. The legal warning, issued on the day of the match, demanded that Iceland stop the campaign and remove all promotional material, according to a statement from the supermarket.
Stunt Details and Legal Action
Iceland renamed three stores located in the hometowns of England players Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Jordan Pickford. The signage change was intended to show support for the national team. However, the FA argued that the campaign could mislead customers into believing there was a commercial relationship between the supermarket and the FA, which did not exist. The letter was sent on July 17, 2026, the same day England faced Argentina in Atlanta.
An Iceland spokesperson expressed shock and disappointment, stating: "We are shocked and deeply disappointed that, on the day the whole country was getting behind England, the FA chose to send lawyers after us instead of celebrating the incredible support being shown for the national team." The spokesperson emphasized that the campaign was purely about backing England and creating excitement for customers and colleagues.
Timing and Impact
The timing of the letter drew criticism from Iceland, as it was sent just hours before the match. Had England won, the cease and desist would have forced the supermarket to remove displays and social media posts before a potential World Cup final. The spokesperson added: "At the very moment the nation could have been coming together to support England on the biggest stage of all, we were being told to take everything down. That's something we find difficult to understand."
Iceland insisted there was no intention to suggest a commercial partnership. The FA also claimed the stunt could negatively impact the image of the England team. The supermarket was ordered to take down all material and submit written confirmation by 4pm on July 17.
England's World Cup Journey
England lost 2-1 to reigning champions Argentina in Atlanta, ending their hopes of reaching the final. The Three Lions will now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday, July 18, in Miami, with kick-off at 10pm BST. The defeat marked another disappointment for England, who have not reached a World Cup final since 1966.
