Daughter Calls for Full Investigation After Mother's Disappearance Overboard in Bahamas
The daughter of a missing Michigan woman who fell overboard during a Caribbean boat trip with her husband has demanded a comprehensive investigation, revealing that "prior issues" have been brought to her attention that could prove crucial to the search. Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old resident of Onsted, Michigan, plunged into the waters surrounding the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas on Saturday evening while boating with her husband, Brian Hooker, 58, during a journey from Hope Town to Elbow Cay.
Search Operation Transitions to Recovery Mission
A joint search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched by Bahamian and United States authorities, with the US Coast Guard later providing aerial support, according to a spokesperson who spoke with CNN. By Tuesday, the mission had been officially transitioned to a recovery operation, as confirmed by Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue Lead Richard Cook in statements to the media outlet.
Daughter Raises Concerns Over "Prior Issues"
While the couple frequently showcased a joyful life on the water through their social media videos under the username "The Sailing Hookers," Lynette's daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has publicly called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to her mother's fall. "There have been prior issues brought to my attention, which may be important for any thorough investigation," Aylesworth, whose biological father is not Brian Hooker, told Fox News Digital.
"If this truly was an accident, I can understand and live with it," she added. "However, there needs to be an intensive review of the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident before that can be determined." Aylesworth's comments follow a statement released just one day earlier, in which she appealed for more extensive involvement from US federal officials in the investigation.
"I have been privy to very little information. My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance," Aylesworth stated. "While the Royal Bahamian police are investigating this matter, I would also appreciate any involvement of the federal, state or local authorities to look into the circumstances of this tragic situation."
Details of the Incident and Search Efforts
According to authorities, the couple's blissful days on the water came to an abrupt halt on Saturday night when Lynette and Brian set out for their yacht at approximately 7:30 PM, traveling in an 8-foot dinghy. Brian claimed that rough waters tossed Lynette overboard into the darkness, and she reportedly took the boat keys with her, causing the dinghy's engine to shut off abruptly.
"Strong currents subsequently carried her away, and [Brian] lost sight of her," the Royal Bahamas Police Force reported. Brian informed authorities that he last observed his wife making her way toward the shore, though it remains uncertain whether she was wearing a lifejacket at the time. Without an operational engine, Brian navigated the boat through the night, eventually reaching the marina around 4 AM Sunday, where an individual notified authorities.
For six hours on Sunday, police on Abaco, alongside the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and local fire and rescue teams, meticulously searched the surrounding waters but found no trace of the missing mother. The investigation continues even as the case has shifted to a recovery operation.
Social Media Presence and Recent Activities
The couple regularly documented their nautical lifestyle across multiple social media platforms. Their most recent Instagram post, shared on Friday afternoon, featured a small boat with the caption, "Not going anywhere for a while?!" Their YouTube channel, which has approximately 300 subscribers, captured years of life on the open water aboard their sailboat named Soulmate.
The final video, posted just four weeks ago, showed the couple in the Bahamas taking an early-morning paddleboard trip along Marsh Harbour, a location renowned as a "world-class boating destination." In the three-minute clip, Lynette filmed the pristine blue waters and waterfront homes while discussing the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded to strike the Bahamas.
Her husband appeared several times in the video as they paddled side by side, observing fish and turtles beneath them, with Lynette occasionally singing to herself. At one point, the couple shared laughter as Brian navigated a narrow passage framed by two slanted trees, the branches and leaves brushing his face as he passed.
Background and Travel Advisory Context
The video in the Caribbean waters represented just one of twelve journeys shared on their channel, including footage from the day they purchased a new sailboat in 2023—the same vessel the pair were heading toward when she fell into the water. In that particular footage, the couple is seen leaving Rockport, Texas, after acquiring their light-blue sailboat, preparing to transport it back to Michigan on their inaugural trip aboard Soulmate.
Lynette recorded the completed project after they painted the deck and performed last-minute fixes, captioning the segment: "The decks are done! We're still married! Party time!" The subsequent shot provided viewers with a glimpse of the cockpit, featuring a small bed and Brian positioned behind the steering wheel, smiling as they finally departed on their journey from the South.
Brief clips of their adventures—from gliding under Mississippi River locks and bridges to their first daring Gulf of Mexico crossing—were shared over the past three years. Some videos depicted their boat traveling alongside jumping dolphins beneath colorful sunsets, while other clips showed the cockpit made cozier with string lights above the windows.
Another post, just over thirty seconds long, showed the couple heading out on the water for a grocery run together, loading several plastic bags and a case of beer onto the boat. On Instagram, the Hookers shared their pit stops along the way, including waterfront bars, snorkeling excursions, swimming adventures, ice cream runs, live music events, animal encounters, and boat upgrades such as an electric cooktop and a separate air fryer.
In their final TikTok post, the couple sailed to Great Guana Cay, with nothing appearing unusual during the outing. The Bahamas is currently under a Level 2 travel advisory, urging visitors to exercise increased caution due to crime and water-related risks. The advisory specifically cites violent crime—including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults—as well as limited boating regulation that has historically led to "injuries and deaths."
