Sick carer caught on CCTV trying to rape dementia patient, 85

A depraved senior carer attempted to rape an 85-year-old dementia patient on her bed. The horror attack launched by Malek Alshabi was captured on CCTV cameras in the room of the victim's northern Lincolnshire care home.

Second Offence at Care Home

It was the second offence in a care home committed by Alshabi, 53, who had previously been convicted of wilful ill-treatment or neglect of a 93-year-old female patient.

At Grimsby Crown Court, Deputy Circuit Judge Timothy Clayson called for a review of the case and to find out how Alshabi came to be working at a care home again. Alshabi admitted attempted rape of the 85-year-old on March 16 this year, Grimsby Live reports.

Victim's Condition

The victim had been a resident at the care home since July last year and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia. Prosecuting, Craig Lowe said the victim had no concept of what was going on around her and was unable to hold a conversation. She needs help with meals and drinks and required assistance with her personal care.

The care home had motion-sensor cameras in rooms in order to alert staff to potential falls by residents. Alshabi responded when the operator of the cameras detected a movement in the woman's room.

Court Proceedings

The camera footage of the attempted rape was shown to the judge privately at court. Alshabi was later arrested at his home in Sheffield. In an interview with police he denied any sexual activity. He told police he was "fasting for Ramadan and not interested in sex."

Mr Lowe said the father-of-five and a grandparent, whose address was recorded as Buchanan Road, Parson Close, Sheffield, had a previous conviction for wounding, for which he received 30 months in prison. In April 2024, he was convicted of wilful neglect and received a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Mr Lowe said the offence in March this year put Alshabi in breach of that suspended sentence. It had been for ill-treatment or wilful neglect of a 93-year-old who suffered hand injuries at a care home in Sheffield. He had also been convicted of criminal damage to a treatment room door at the home.

The offences were committed while he was intoxicated, the court heard. On one occasion previously he had been found slumped in a corridor due to his state.

Defence and Sentencing

Defence barrister, Tim Savage said his client "is so ashamed of what he has done." He said the victim is "mercifully unaware of the ordeal." He said his client had spared her family from a trial by admitting his guilt.

He admitted it was a "breach of trust." Mr Savage said his client was "a devoted family man." Judge Clayson said the victim was a "deeply vulnerable lady, lacking capacity in every concept and needing assistance in every aspect of personal care."

He jailed Alshabi for nine years with a further three years on licence because of the danger he posed.

Additional Measures

A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed indefinitely. The defendant will also be on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely, which requires him to notify police of where he is living.

Alshabi will also be placed on the Disclosure and Barring List which stops him working in future with children or vulnerable adults. The defendant was told he will serve at least two thirds of his sentence in prison before being considered for parole and will then be on licence.

Judge Clayson said he was "very concerned" that Alshabi had been convicted while working in a care home but was able to gain employment at another care home. "I don't know how that came about," he said.
