Travellers have refused to leave council-owned sports pitches in Bridgend despite a legal notice, as residents report abuse and intimidation.
Encampment Set Up on Litchard Playing Fields
An illegal Traveller encampment was established at Litchard playing fields in Bridgend on Monday, June 15. Around 13 caravans and up to 20 cars occupied the site, which is used by local football team Litchard FC and the community.
Local councillor Martin Williams said residents have been subjected to verbal abuse and threatening behaviour. He reported being confronted by a group of Travellers who threatened to 'spark him out' when he took photos of the mess left behind.
Council Legal Action
Bridgend Council served a legal direction under Section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, requiring removal within 24 hours. The Travellers ignored the notice. The council has now applied for a Section 78 order to enable High Court enforcement officers to remove the vehicles. A hearing will take place at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Monday, June 22.
A council spokesperson said: 'Local authorities are legally required to undertake mandatory checks and welfare assessments in such circumstances, and the council is liaising with the travelling community to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.'
Community Impact
Litchard FC said the encampment has prevented hundreds of young people and the wider community from using the playing fields. It is believed the Travellers gained access through a broken bollard, reported to the council over a month ago.
Councillor Martin Williams expressed frustration over lack of communication from the council. 'We understand a process has to be followed, but the lack of updates is frustrating,' he said.
South Wales Police said they are aware of the encampment and working with the council to monitor developments.
