A major manhunt is underway after a convicted criminal serving a 23-year sentence for attempted murder absconded from a prison in the North West.
Details of the escape
Kieran Cameron, 43, was reported missing from HMP Thorn Cross in Warrington at 9.20pm on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The Category D adult male prison is now at the centre of a significant police investigation into how the inmate was able to walk out.
Cameron is currently serving a lengthy prison term for a serious attempted murder that took place in Dorset back in 2016. Officers from Cheshire Police have taken the lead in the search and have issued a stark warning to the public.
Public warning and description
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Henderson, of the Serious and Organised Crime Unit, urged vigilance. “We are appealing for the help of the public to trace Kieran Cameron, who is unlawfully at large after leaving HMP Thorn Cross in Warrington,” he stated.
The force has stressed that people should not approach Cameron under any circumstances but should instead dial 999 immediately if they see him.
He is described as:
- White
- Approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall
- Medium build
- Heavily receding hair
- Ginger and grey beard
Cameron is known to have extensive links to the Manchester, Liverpool, and Dorset areas, which police believe he may try to reach.
Ongoing investigation and how to help
The search operation is being coordinated from Cheshire. Authorities are pursuing all lines of enquiry to locate the escaped prisoner and return him to custody.
DCI Henderson added: “If you have any information as to where Cameron may be, please call 101 or visit the Cheshire Police website.” Information should reference the incident log number IML 2247029.
The escape from the open prison raises immediate questions about security procedures and risk assessments for inmates. The public are advised to remain alert and report any sightings without delay.
