Emergency services have recovered the body of a young woman from the River Tees following a large-scale search operation in County Durham.
Major Emergency Response
The incident was triggered by reports of a kayaker in difficulty in the river near Barnard Castle shortly before 2pm on Saturday. A major multi-agency response was immediately launched, involving firefighters, paramedics, police, the coastguard, and a search and mountain rescue team.
Despite the extensive efforts of all crews, the search ended in tragedy. The body of a 20-year-old woman was recovered from the water just after 4pm.
Police Statement and Family Support
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary confirmed the devastating outcome. "We were called to reports of concern for a kayaker who had got into difficulty in the river just before 2pm," they said.
"Multiple emergency services were involved in the search but sadly the body of a 20-year-old woman was recovered just after 4pm. Her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers."
