Woman Hospitalised After Desperate Balcony Leap to Flee E-Scooter Blaze

A woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being forced to jump from a third-floor balcony to escape a terrifying e-scooter battery fire in Lewisham, south-east London. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that the incident occurred on April 12 at a flat complex on Recurver Road, following what they described as a "catastrophic failure" of a lithium battery.

Trapped by Smoke in Bedroom

The blaze ignited in the hallway of the property, where the e-scooter had been charging for approximately 12 hours. As smoke rapidly filled the flat, one woman found herself trapped in a bedroom with no clear escape route. With smoke travelling in and the fire spreading, she made the desperate decision to vault over the balcony railing, plunging three storeys to the street below in a bid to survive.

Firefighters assisted the woman at the scene before paramedics from the London Ambulance Service transported her to a local hospital. She was treated for smoke inhalation and serious injuries sustained from the fall. A second occupant, a man, was safely led out of the building by fire crews and did not require hospital treatment.

London Fire Brigade Issues Urgent Safety Warning

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Field of the LFB used this harrowing incident to reiterate critical safety advice for e-bike and e-scooter users. He emphasised that although working smoke alarms alerted the occupants quickly, the woman's predicament highlights the dangers of charging these devices in escape routes like hallways or near front doors.

Field stated: "This incident underscores why you should always ensure your escape route is clear. We strongly recommend never charging your e-bike or e-scooter on your means of escape. In London, we are attending a fire involving these vehicles on average every other day."

The LFB's #ChargeSafe campaign urges owners to purchase batteries from reputable sellers rather than online marketplaces or second-hand sources, which are often prone to dangerous failures. Additional advice includes:

  • Avoid mismatching chargers with devices
  • Do not overcharge batteries
  • Never leave e-bikes or e-scooters unattended while charging

Rising Trend of Lithium Battery Fires in the Capital

Lithium battery fires from e-bikes and e-scooters represent one of the fastest-growing fire risks in London. The capital witnessed a record 206 such fires in 2025, with more than 30 incidents already reported in 2026. This alarming trend has prompted renewed calls for public awareness and adherence to safety guidelines.

The LFB continues to monitor these incidents closely, emphasising that proper charging practices and equipment sourcing can prevent similar tragedies. The woman involved in the Lewisham fire is recovering, with the service extending their wishes for her swift recuperation.
